Focusing on the material handling industry, an overview of the different technologies used in auto-ID systems from bar codes to RFID are provided in this paper. It includes a basic description of the technologies, its benefits and limitations, and guidelines on designing a system. Barcode scanning technology is reviewed including the types of bar code symbols, components, operation, system design considerations, and performance accuracy.
