NBS Deploys RFID Intelligent Feeders System

Leading EMS provider NBS (www.nbscorp.com) has today announced the installation and deployment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) driven intelligent feeder and materials management system throughout the company's Santa Clara, California manufacturing facility. This highly sophisticated traceability will enable NBS to electronically track, monitor, match and record components to printed circuit board assemblies while in-process, eliminating the very limited manual logging practice still in use by its competitors

The NBS implementation is based upon Juki's IFS-X2 Intelligent Feeder System and employs contactless RFID technology which provides access to feeder intelligence both inside and outside of placement machines. This includes offline feeder trolleys and storage carts, thus providing feeder and associated component visibility and precise material management throughout their highly automated, purpose built new facility that opened in June, 2008.

"The impact of an error on an entire production lot can easily exceed the initial production cost and even raise serious legal consequences," observed Michael Maslana, NBS President and CEO. "Our new system provides totally closed loop tracking of the entire material flow and manufacturing process to help ensure both error free production and total traceability."

IFS-X2 supports tracking of all material in various processes for the complete assembly of PCBs. All materials: boards, components, solder paste, flux can be followed from receipt through all processes right down to the individual placement position on the board, including printing, assembly, inspection and soldering. All data is stored in a database which facilitates tracking and the generation of traceability reports. This ensures complete transparency for process validation and error analysis.

Maslana continued, "Our addition of RFID technology is just another example of NBS pioneering changes in EMS services. We are excited to announce this new and innovative capability and look forward to its most enthusiastic reception. While we expect the medical, aerospace and military market segments to immediately embrace its use, this also applies well to commercial products."

Founded in 1999 as a PCB layout specialist, NBS has since its entry into EMS services in 2004 achieved significant year over year growth by executing upon a unique business model that delivers leading edge services in design engineering, manufacturing, and test and verification to a to a large and diverse customer base serving all industry segments and geographies.
