Eching, Germany October 17, 2006: Kontron announced today the latest member of the 6U CompactPCI product family for communication networks - the CP6923. The Kontron CP6923 is a high-end solution with superior features at a low cost.
It provides built-in switching capabilities for CPCI installations at an unmatched price-to-performance ratio by implementing the latest technologies including the highly compact Broadcom BCM56502 Gigabit Ethernet switch chip. The Kontron CP6923 applies to services like VoIP installations for call servers, media gateways, trunking gateways (both wired and wireless networks) as well as VoIP systems in enterprise networks with varying performance demands. A boost in switching capacity allows systems to stay ahead of the rising transaction and traffic load for VoIP applications. The Kontron CP6923 is a 6U hot-swappable CPCI switch with 24GbE ports and two high capacity uplinks (10GbE) witch makes systems cascadable. It supports all relevant standards in carrier grade L2 and L3 switching, routing, VLANs and QoS (Diffserv) developed by Kontron.
The Kontron CP6923 Flexi-Switch is a PICMG 2.16-compliant 6U CPCI Gigabit Ethernet switch with 24 channels. It provides leading edge technology to CPCI installations, thus maximising their usage and longevity. It provides latest technologies in non-blocking layer 3 switching and routing with two 10GbE uplink ports to the outside world. As a built-in high-performance CPCI switch for call servers, media servers and gateways, the Kontron CP6923 provides a fully managed software environment and comprehensive firmware package with seamless integration into the shelf and its shelf management by IPMI V1.5. It supports hot-swap capabilities, the reset of basic fabric and reliable field upgrades for all software components. An IP router is integrated into the base fabric. The Kontron CP6923 contains dual boot images with roll-back capabilities during upgrades. The system may be managed via SNMP with standard MIBs and command line interfaces over Telnet, SSH or serial lines.
The Kontron CP6923 is customizable based on the individual requirements of the installation. Its modular software architecture facilitates project-specific customization. Capacity may be increased within the shelf over native CPCI connections.
The Kontron CP6923 complies with PICMG 2.0 R3.0 specifications, PICMG 2.1 R.2.0 hot-swap specifications, PICMG 2.9 R1.0 system management, PICMG 2.16 R1.0 packet switching backplane, IPMI specification V1.5, IEEE 802.3, 2000 and IEEE 802.3ae. It contains a 24-port GbE layer 3 switch with 19 link ports to CPCI boards and 1 link port to second fabric boards (all ports 10/100/1000Base-T). Depending on the model, the following uplinks are supported: 4 uplinks GbE (10/100/1000Base-T copper based) on the Kontron CP6923-C, 4 uplinks 1GbE (SFB) plus 2 uplinks 10GbE XFP on the CP6923-O.
The Ethernet implementation supports QoS (IEEE 802.1p) on all ports, as well as VLAN including VLAN registration with GARP/GVRP (IEEE 802.1q). The routing capabilities also support DiffServ standards and redundancy of the routing functionality using a second switch hub board. The services include onboard event management, test and trace facilities, power on the shelf diagnostics and the persistent storage of configuration across restarts. They also support the retrieving and installing of multiple configurations.
