Automatic start/stop option for Volvo Penta industrial diesel engines can achieve fuel savings of 5% or more by switching engine off when idling and consequently helps reduce emissions and noise. When machine's engine idles, this option turns engine off after pre-set time (usually 5–10 sec). Engine starts immediately when driver activates any of machine's controls, and work can continue. Start/stop capability can be deactivated or reactivated as needed.
