Original Press Release:

Castolin Eutectic Introduces XuperCoat Wear Resistant Coating for Continuous Casting

At AISTech tradeshow in Nashville USA (8 - 11 May), Castolin Eutectic introduces on the American market a unique coating service for mold plates and tubes used in the continuous steel casting process. XuperCOAT™ ceramic composite coating protects the copper molds against excessive wear from hot steel during the casting process, specifically high temperature abrasion, metal fatigue and friction.

Monitor Coatings, surface engineering company belonging to Castolin Eutectic group, developed this high performance ceramic composite coating technology in the UK. Recent developments in the application of the technology now enable XuperCOAT to be applied on all types of molds including bloom and billet tubes.

XuperCOAT coating delivers best-in-class results in terms of mold service life, cast product quality and reduced caster operating costs. Stainless and carbon steel longs and flats producers report yield increases in cast steel on the same mold in the range of 2 to 8 fold compared to other solutions. With such low wear rates, there are marked improvements in the downstream surface quality of the billets and slabs, while the integrity of the original copper mold asset remains maintained.

XuperCOAT coated molds exhibit higher thermal conductivity, hardness, and ductility all related to the coating properties. As well, as low friction and superior surface finish related to the expert application. Together these characteristics lead to improved cast product quality and fewer wear related stoppages.

Where can you meet our Steel industry experts next? At the European Continuous Caster Conference in Vienna, Austria, from June 26 till 29, 2017.
