Alcatel Debuts OmniStack LS 6200 Switch Family, Bringing Feature Rich 10/100 Enterprise Switching With PoE to Cost-Sensitive Network Edge

CALABASAS, Calif., Sept. 13 -- Alcatel (NYSE: ALA; Paris: CGEP.PA) today announced availability of the OmniStack LS 6200 family of 10/100 Ethernet stackable workgroup switches, designed for the cost-sensitive edge of a converged network. Alcatel's latest stackable switch family supports next-generation converged network applications and provides wire-speed performance, network security and optional power over Ethernet (PoE).

The Alcatel OmniStack LS 6200 delivers a value-priced, comprehensive toolset that supports strict enterprise network security requirements for customers that includes the quarantining of non-compliant users. This family of switches offers simplified deployment of network quarantine services using Alcatel's OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager.

The Alcatel OmniStack (OS) LS 6200 family also provides advanced, layer two-plus features including multicast VLANs, per-service Q-in-Q tagging and quality of service to support converged applications of data, voice and video. The high-performance Alcatel OmniStack LS 6200 switches allow end-users to have access to new real-time multimedia applications, while simultaneously providing better network security to protect user data, network uptime and mission critical application availability.

"There is an enormous market for feature rich, value priced Fast Ethernet switches at the edge of today's next-generation networks," said Tom Burns, senior VP and general manager of Alcatel's enterprise network infrastructure activities. "The OmniStack LS 6200s address this market and round out our network product line."

"This new workgroup solution enables remote enterprise network users to reap the benefits of lower-priced, more affordable data, voice, video and wireless technologies," said Urban Axelsson of Fiberdata, an Alcatel channel partner. "The 6200 family is an ideal solution for customers seeking to replace legacy 10/100 platforms to realize the benefits of expanded IP services."

The Alcatel OmniStack LS 6200 switches are available with either 24 or 48 ports and feature an "all-in-one" design with four Gigabit Ethernet ports per switch, providing a complete solution for simultaneously linking to other workgroup switches and to the core. The new switches feature two copper 10/100/1000 ports that can be used to stack the devices, thus eliminating the need for expensive, proprietary connectors and cabling -- while providing the stack resiliency typically found only in proprietary solutions. Two of the four ports are combo ports that can be used either as fiber or copper uplinks to the core.

Any combination of Alcatel OmniStack LS 6200 switches can be stacked together, up to a total of eight switches in a single stack. Optional one-to- one backup power supplies are available for mission-critical networks that provide backup power for both the chassis and PoE devices.

The Alcatel OmniStack LS 6200s are the only 10/100 stackable switches available that support multiple MAC-based VLANs per port which are essential to fully supporting emerging security solutions for converged networks.
