Original Press Release:

Super Fast, Super Accurate, Super Speed VMCs

Haas Automation, Inc., adds yet another model to its popular line of Super Speed VMCs. The new VF-6SS is a high-performance vertical machining center designed for high-volume production, and other work where high speed and short cycle times are important. It comes standard with an innovative 12,000-rpm inline direct-drive spindle, ultra-fast tool changer and high-speed rapids.

Based on the shop-proven Haas VF-6 platform (64" x 32" x 30" travels), the VF-6SS takes performance and affordability to a whole new level. This machine is equipped with a
12,000-rpm, 40-taper spindle that uses a unique inline, direct-drive system to couple the motor directly to the spindle. This system yields less vibration, heat and noise than other drive systems, providing better surface finishes, extreme thermal stability and very quiet operation. The spindle's 30-hp vector dual-drive system provides plenty of low-end torque, as well as the speed necessary for high-speed machining operations. On-the-fly wye-delta switching provides a wide constant-horsepower band.

The VF-6SS also features a high-speed, 24-pocket side-mount tool changer that swaps tools in 1.6 seconds. To reduce cycle times further and keep non-machining time to a minimum, the VF-6SS uses high-pitch ballscrews and high-torque servo motors for rapids of 1,200 ipm on the Y and Z axes, and 900 ipm on the X axis. Other high-productivity standard features include an automatice chip auger system, programmable coolant nozzle, floppy disk drive, 1 MB of program memory, Visual Quick Code programming and a remote jog handle.

While the VF-6SS offers substantial performance in base configuration, it is possible to boost its capabilities even further with a wide selection of available options. These include a 40-pocket side-mount tool changer, 1000-psi through-spindle coolant, 4th- and 5th-axis capabilities, 16 MB program memory, hard-disk drive with Ethernet and USB support, high-speed machining software and more.
