Original Press Release:

New USB Hi-Speed Serial/Hub Module from FTDI Brings Higher Level of Connectivity to System Designs

Furnishing engineers with a complement of 3 USB and 4 serial ports

Future Technology Devices International Limited (FTDI) eases the integration of USB into existing electronic systems, with the release of the FT4232H USB serial/hub module. Designed to connect to the company's V2DIPx modules, as well as any USB Host interface (e.g. PC), this product greatly expands the number of interfaces that can be accessed downstream from the Host.

Implemented on a compact 75.04 mm x 23.37 mm PCB, the module has an FTDI FT4232H USB 2.0 Hi-Speed to UART/MPSSE chip which supports data rates of 40Mb/s and can take care of all USB signalling and protocols.

This new USB Hi-Speed serial/hub Module offers three external downstream USB ports - two via a dual USB connector and another via the 0.1" pitch, DIL connector pins. The FT4232H also features four serial interfaces that can be configured for either asynchronous or synchronous operation - two with the option to be independently configured via an MPSSE engine (allowing the FT4232H to function as two UART/bit-bang ports plus two MPSSE engines which can be used to emulate JTAG, SPI, I2C, bit-bang or other synchronous serial modes).

The module's GL850G USB 2.0 hub controller chip supports both individual and gang power management modes. It can be optionally customised using an EEPROM memory located on the module, enabling customization of PID/VID and other more complex settings.

Highly suited to development purposes this module can serve as a prototyping platform, proving the validity of adding USB connectivity to new and legacy system designs.

By connecting the hub module to the USB socket of a V2DIPx module, together they can function as a single module with an extended selection of interface options. The FT4232H hub module can also serve as a hub device connected to a PC or the FT4232H evaluation module.

The new FTDI FT4232H USB Hi-Speed serial/hub module (FT-MOD-4232HUB) is available now at a cost of $35.00 for single units. Volume pricing is available on request.

About FTDI

Future Technology Devices International (FTDI) specialises in the design and supply of silicon and software solutions for the Universal Serial Bus (USB). FTDI offers a simple route to USB migration by combining easy-to-implement IC devices with proven, ready-to-use, royalty-free USB firmware and driver software. The company's single and multi-channel USB peripheral devices come with an easy-to-use UART or FIFO interface. These popular devices can be used in legacy USB-to-RS232/RS422 converter applications or to quickly interface an MCU, PLD, or FPGA to USB. A wide range of evaluation kits and modules are available to evaluate FTDI's silicon prior to design-in.

Vinculum is FTDI's brand name for a range of USB Host/Slave controller ICs that provide easy implementation of USB Host controller functionality within products and use FTDI's tried and tested firmware to significantly reduce development costs and time to market.

FTDI is a fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Glasgow, UK with R&D centres in Glasgow and Singapore and has regional sales offices in Oregon, USA, Shanghai, China and Taipei, Taiwan. More information is available at www.ftdichip.com
