USB-Powered Devices replace missing PC serial ports.
Press Release Summary:
Based on Model FT232BM USB UART IC, Series USB-COM-M allows RS232 serial devices to communicate with USB PCs that have no serial ports. Housed in mountable metal enclosures, units add one RS232 Windows serial COM port without adding card-slot or external power supply, and support data transfer rates up to 1 million bps. Devices include full set of data and control signals on DB9M connectors, internal 128 byte transmit buffer FIFO, and 384 byte receive buffer FIFO.
Original Press Release:
Industrial USB-Powered Devices Replace Missing PC Serial Ports
Pittsford, New York. USB-COM-M series are ready-made metal-box-housed solutions for allowing RS232 serial devices to talk to newer USB PC's, most of which have no serial ports. The cost-effective USB-COM-M series are based on FTDI's single chip FT232BM USB UART i.c. for transferring serial data over the Universal Serial Bus, and are housed in mountable metal enclosures for rugged application areas. They add one RS232 Windows Serial COM ports (Virtual COMports) without needing card-slots or external power supplies. They use a PC's USB connection - great for laptop PCs without even one serial port, but also adding an extra port to PCs that have one. USB Plug-and-Play allows easy serial port expansion and requires no IRQ, DMA, or I/O port resources. Using a USB-powered serial device is a great solution for legacy medical and industrial equipment, removing the need for product redesigns.
USB-COM-M series feature a full set of data and control signals (TX-, TK+, RX+, RX-, GND, RTS-, RTS+, CTS+, CTS-) on their DB9M connectors, with an internal 128 byte transmit buffer FIFO and a 384 byte receive buffer FIFO and support data transfer rates of up to 1 million bps. No external power supply is required take their power from the USB bus, so they can be used anywhere!
For situations that require it, optical isolation and surge protection is available with USB-COM-SI-M. The RS-232 port is optically isolated with 2000 volt DC optical isolation, and is protected by a surge arrestor to withstand electrostatic discharges and power surges up to 25KV ESD. Surge suppression on all signals prevents damage caused by lightning or high voltages.
USB-COM-M is priced at $39 and USB-COM-SI-M is $69.00. Both come complete with drivers for Microsoft Windows98/ME/2K/xP (Apple OS-8/9/X and Linux drivers are also available) from Saelig Co. Inc. NY 585-425-3753; -3835fax; info@saelig.com;
