GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms Announces Low Cost, High Performance Gigabit Ethernet Switch

NETernity(TM) CP981RC designed to enable continuing growth in network communications traffic

o Unmanaged switch enables easy deployment

o Support for high availability hot swap maximizes network uptime

o Range of flexible configuration options ensures cost-effectiveness

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA March 25, 2009 GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced the NETernity(TM) CP981RC CompactPCI Gigabit Ethernet Switch. The 12- or 24-port unmanaged Layer-2 switch is designed to provide a high performance, cost-effective solution that responds to the growing pervasiveness of Ethernet as the backbone technology on which modern communications networks are built.

The high speed switching of communications traffic to ensure it is routed to the correct destination is a fundamental requirement of communications networks today, whether that data is travelling around the world or within a computer chassis. According to a recent report from the ARC Advisory Group, the worldwide market for Ethernet-based devices and I/O will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.5 per cent over the next five years, with 2007's total of one million new nodes increasing to over three million by 2012.

"The CP981RC complements our already extensive line of embedded switches. This new switch introduces a new cost point with very attractive price/performance and port densities" said Rubin Dhillon, Communications Product Manager at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. "This is the board that will allow customers to achieve full wire-speed Gigabit Ethernet switching once out of reach because of the cost. With the density of ports, IPV6 support and the choice of copper or optical media, this will be a real game changer."

The CP981RC is a 6U CompactPCI switch, conforming to industry standards that enables it to be embedded within the majority of today's network systems for customers in telecommunications, industry and defense. With its high density 12- and 24-port capability, the CP981RC allows customers to configure the maximum number of communications ports within a single or dual CompactPCI slot, making for highly cost-effective solutions. The provision of front I/O in an unmanaged switch delivers excellent configuration flexibility and accessibility for improved ease of use. The CP981RC's flexibility is further enhanced by support for 10BaseT, 100BaseTX and1000BaseT, 1000BaseSX or 1000LX interfaces. Both copper and fiber interfaces can be supported on the same switch, enabling customers to specify the solution that most precisely meets their needs. Importantly, the CP981RC supports hot-swap capability, so that it is field replaceable while the system is running, ensuring maximum network availability and improved user service.

NETernity Ethernet switches are available in a variety of form factors, interfaces, levels of ruggedness, port configurations, media support, and types of management. Fully Managed Layer 2/3+ and Managed Layer 2 switches provide control and monitoring capabilities via local or remote access. Unmanaged switches are Layer 2 switches with no operator interfacing and are designed for quick deployment in well-defined applications.
