[June 23, 2020] In a recent customer-requested demonstration, UltraFlex Power Technologies proved how induction heaters could be efficiently used in the process of evenly preheating aluminum castings.
UltraFlex - a leading manufacturer of digitally-controlled induction heaters - is frequently setting up test setups where the results from a specific, customer-requested induction heating application need to be evaluated. In this case, a customer from the manufacturing industry was looking to preheat aluminum castings to 198°F (92°C) as evenly as possible in 2 minutes. The preheating would then be followed by a machining operation for the part.
UltraFlex application engineers considered that an induction heater from UltraFlex UltraHeat SM series would be most appropriate in this case. UltraHeat SM are compact 5kW induction heating systems that operate with either water-cooled or air-cooled remote heat station. They are easy to tune to a wide range of loads and coils.
To heat the part on all sides, it had been placed inside a helical coil. Power of 1.5 kW was then supplied by the induction heater. During the heating process, UltraFlex temperature measuring devices showed that there were specific hot spots in the part, but they dissipated over time and the temperature in the entire part evened out.
The entire preheating process could be successfully completed within the required timeframe of 2 minutes. In addition to being time-efficient, this was also an energy-efficient and repeatable process, producing consistent results regardless of the operator skills. Finally, the induction preheating is an environmentally-safe process, with no smoke, waste heat, and noxious emissions.
