New Turning Insert Boosts Range of Applications

Valenite announces the addition of yet another insert design to its ValTURN(TM) lineup of turning tools and systems with the introduction of the PM2-designated ISO positive screw-down chipbreaker. The new geometry configuration augments the firm's application coverage range for light duty precision turning, boring and profiling operations in steels and stainless steels along with high-temperature alloys and cast iron materials. The inserts are available in 3 separate grade classifications and with either a 7° or 11° relief angle, and manufactured to 'G' (precision ground) tolerance levels. The new product grouping currently offers 93 insert grade and geometry combinations to meet a wide range of application criteria and to optimize cutting performance and provide extended service life.

The PM2 products feature a cutting action that's high positive form and is suited for feed rates in the range of 0.005" to 0.015" (0,13 to 0,38mm) RPM along with metal removal settings typically between 0.005 to 0.100" (0,13 to 0,38mm) depth of cut.

The alpha-numeric designation of Valenite's insert top form geometry nomenclature represents the typical operation, i.e., the P signifies the insert is a ISO positive design, the M represents medium machining operations, and the number, running from 1 thru 9, identifies the relative edge strength, with nine being the highest strength and/or fastest feed rate. For the PM2, the '2' means the insert is for light depth of cut applications and modest feed rates.

The three grades of PM2 inserts available include the VP5515 and VP5525 for carbon and alloy steels. Both are MTCVD-process coated carbide using TiCN/Al2O3/TiN. The substrate of these two grades is enriched with cobalt to provide resistance to edge chipping and a polished cutting edge inhibits material build-up. The third grade is VP1510, a tough carbide substrate that is also MTCVD-processed with TiCN/Al2O3 coating, ideal for cast irons.

The PM2 chip breaker inserts are integral components of the ValTURN Turning System that includes a vast selection of inserts for steel, stainless steels, cast irons, high temperature alloys, aluminum and non-ferrous alloys as well as ValEDGE(TM) ceramic and CBN tooling for hardened part turning applications. The array of inserts is complemented by the ValTURN ProGRIP(TM) series of toolholders that offer stability, accuracy and versatility in an easy-to-use format.

As with all Valenite products, the ValTURN Turning System tools are supported through the company's top-rated ValPRO(TM) Customer Service for ordering, pricing and delivery scheduling, plus a technical staff offering continuously updated product and application data, and recommendations to optimize metal cutting productivity.
