announced the Broadcom® BCM8022 10-Gigabit Ethernet to
10GBASE-CX4 Retimer - a cost-efficient solution that enables 10-
Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) data transmissions over short distances for such applications as aggregating and stacking of network switches and routers.

The rapid growth in adoption of Gigabit Ethernet links to the desktop, mobile PC, and throughout the network infrastructure has created the need for data aggregation over affordable and reliable high-bandwidth channels within data centers and wiring closets. In the past, these large data transfers required the use of expensive optical components primarily designed for longer distance applications. The new BCM8022 allows system developers to build l0-GbE links over low-cost, standard copper medium to support distances up to 15 meters (utilizing Infiniband 4X Cable) for box-to-box or rack-to-rack type
interconnects. The BCM8022 aggregates network infrastructure
components to create a high bandwidth, low-cost link over short
distances and is able to clean up the signal prior to transferring data.

According to the January 2003 Worldwide Ethernet Switch Market 5-Year Forecast published by Dell'Oro Group (a California-based market research firm that specializes in strategic competitive analysis in the networking and telecommunications industries), modular and fixed Gigabit Ethernet switch port shipments are expected to grow nearly 400% over the next three years.

The BCM8022 was developed in accordance with the new IEEE
802.3ak (draft) standard, called 10GBASE-CX4, which is being
developed to meet the demand for very low-cost 10-Gigabit per second (Gbps) links that interconnect switches as customers move to 1000BASE-T attached desktops. The new single-chip supports 10-Gigabit Ethernet Attachment Unit Interfaces (XAUI) to 10GBASE-CX4, as well as standard XAUI to XAUI retiming for transport or backplane applications. The device has two complete IEEE 802.3ae 10-Gigabit Ethernet Physical Coding Sublayers (PCS) with selectable 8B/1OB encoding/decoding along with advanced signal conditioning blocks on-chip.

Technical Information
The BCM8022 integrates four retimer channels leveraging Broadcom's third generation of high-speed SerDes (serializer/deserializer) cores available in high production volumes today and utilizes low-power, 0.13-micron CMOS process technology. The high-speed serial I/O of the BCM8022 supports transmission rates ranging from 1-Gbps to 3.2-Gbps. An on-chip phase lock loop (PLL) synthesizes the supplied reference clock to support the desired transmit rate, while clock and data recovery (CDR) units recover the receive rate clock for timing.

For high-speed serial comnections, the BCM8022 incorporates Tx pre-emphasis on the transmit channels and Rx equalization on the receive channels. Transmit pre-emphasis is programmable to improve the overall cable reach and compensate for electrical imperfections associated with traces and connectors. Rx equalization provides optimal performance over a variety of receive interfaces.

In order to complement existing 10-Gigabit Ethernet designs,
Broadcom offers a complete BCM8022-based evaluation board in the
XENPAK form factor for customer evaluation and design.

Availability
The BCM8022 is sampling today with production quantities expected in Q3 of 2003. Broadcom also offers a complete evaluation kit including reference designs, evaluation boards, GUI-based software and documentation.
