Broadcom Introduces Industry's First VariRate(TM) Transceiver/Mapper Enabling Single Linecard Solutions for Multi-Protocol Datacom, Storage and Telecom Services

New Cost-Effective, Single-Chip Transceiver Featuires the Industry's Lowest Jitter Generation Supporting Gigabit Ethernet, 1- and 2-Gigabit Fibre Channel and OC-3/12/48 SONET/SDH Traffic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Networld + Interop 2003 - April 28, 2003 -
Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of
silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, today
introduced a highly integrated, low-power, variable-rate
transceiver/mapper device that lowers the cost of data communication (datacom), telecommunication (telecom) and storage services while providing fast upgrades and provisioning of these services. With the new Broadcom® BCM8228 VariRate(TM) device, system Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can now develop single linecard solutions that feature a host of transmission protocols and speeds from the same physical link.

The BCM8228 provides interfaces at data rates ranging from 155
Megabits per second (Mbps) up through 2.666 Gigabits per second
(Gbps). The services supported by the BCM8228 include telecom
services at OC-3 (155-Mbps), OC-12 (622-Mbps) and OC-48 (2.5-
Gbps); datacom services at Gigabit Ethernet (1-Gbps); and Storage Area Network (SAN) Fibre Channel services (1- and 2-Gbps).

With the new all-in-one BCM8228, service providers will be able to provide new services or upgrade existing services from a single linecard and can reduce their operational expenses by eliminating the need to maintain an inventory of multiple linecards for each protocol and data rate. Maintenance costs will also be lowered since all of the protocols reside within a single card versus multiple cards, reducing the amount of resources and hardware required to maintain the services.

The BCM8228 device can be deployed in a wide range of equipment
for Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) and Wide Area Networks
(WANs) including routers, switches and SONET/SDH systems. Due to
its multi-protocol capabilities, the BCM8228 is well-suited for Multi-Service Provisioning and Switching Platforms, the latest generation of SONET/SDH equipment. SONET/SDH (Synchronous Optical
Network/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) are network standards for
transmitting data at high rates over fiber optic lines.

Broadcom's BCM8220 OC-48 transceiver, which was introduced two
years ago, set the benchmark for jitter performance and feature
richness, and has been utilized by a broad base of key OEMs who have designed the chip into a variety of systems. The new BCM8228 offers a range of powerful new features, such as VariRate technology and integrated SONET/SDH mapper and demapper functionality that extends Broadcom's leadership position in optical networking.

According to market research, SONET/SDH equipment represents over
60% of the total optical transport market and is expected to resume significant growth from 2004 onward. One primary area of growth (beginning in 2003) is SONET/SDH systems for Metro networks and, in particular, the new Multi-Service Provisioning and Switching Platforms.

These applications also address the fast growing demand for storage and datacom services within Metro and Access networks.

The BCM8228 implements transmit and receive functions for various
data protocols (and their associated rates) including Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), Fibre Channel (FC), Fiber Connection (FICON), Enterprise System Connection (ESCON), and OC-3/12/48 with or without Forward Error Correction (FEC).

Technical Information
The BCM8228 VariRate transceiver/mapper features the industry's
best-in-class jitter generation of less than 4mUI rms (4-milli Unit Interval root mean square) when operating in OC-48 mode. The device offers a large and advanced feature set that includes SONET/SDH rate adaptation and performance monitoring that provides the mapping and demapping functions to transform STS-3/STM-1 and STS-12/STM-4 data streams into or from STS-48/STM-16 frames. The new single-chip also provides high-jitter tolerance and the industry's lowest jitter generation that exceed Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), IEEE 802.3, Telcordia, ANSI and ITU-T standards.

The BCM8228 can be powered with a single 1.8V supply or a dual
1.8/3.3V supply without any special power supply sequencing
requirements. It is housed within a 196-pin, 15mm x 15mm BGA
package and features low-power dissipation of less than 1.1 W. Unused blocks can be powered down to decrease power dissipation even further.

Price and Availability
Samples of the BCM8228 VariRate Transceiver are currently available to all customers at a unit price of $150 per 1,000 units. Broadcom also offers a complete evaluation kit including reference designs, evaluation boards, GUI-based software and documentation.
