Eurotherm Introduces a Scaleable Din Rail Mount Temperature Controller

LEESBURG, VA, USA, June 17, 2004 - Eurotherm, a leading manufacturer and supplier of industrial instrumentation for process control and data acquisition products, and a unit of Invensys plc, introduces the RFS Din Rail mount temperature controller. The controller is designed for panel mounting, and thus has no integral display. Parameters are accessed via a Modbus® RS-485 network. The RFS is ideally suited for temperature control in plastic extruders, injection hot runners, small ovens, refrigeration and food and brewing applications.

The RFS allows for exact scalability without the wiring expense typically found in other Din Rail mount temperature controllers. These savings are accomplished through a modular bus cable that provides for power, field communications and coordination with the common I/O unit. Start with only one temperature loop and then easily scale up to 12 loops without any additional wiring.

This full-featured temperature controller offers up to two control outputs. The universal Thermocouple or RTD input is coupled with a responsive SMART continuous auto-tuning PID control algorithm. Plastic producers will appreciate the soft start routine. Synchronized pre-heating eliminates differential heating during startup due to different heating rates of individual heaters. To reduce electrical loading, the sequence of the RFS control outputs are scheduled according to the selected Modbus address. This significantly reduces maximum startup currents.

To maximize the Modbus data transfer rates between the RFS and the operator station or the programmable controller, important operating parameters are grouped. The RFS is able to communicate relevant parameter information with a single data request. The RFS is equipped with an RS-485 driver that has an input impedance four times higher than the standard, allowing up to 120 RFS units to be connected to a single master.

Configuring the RFS is a snap since it operates like a single loop temperature controller. All the registers can be accessed over the Modbus communication interface. In addition, an optional configuration package can be used to copy configurations from one RFS to another. The configuration tool can also be used to monitor the parameters in the RFS.

The RFS provides many protection alarms. Process high, process low and deviation alarms are standard. The alarm latching function holds the alarm on until it is acknowledged. An optional current transformer input can be used to detect partial or total breakdown of the load.

Eurotherm is offering a remote mounted text display, which acts as an operator station for the RFS. This high visibility 3 color back lit display can support up to 30 RFS units. Standard screen configurations are available for instant functionality.

Overall, the RFS offers scalability and functionality that will adapt to the changing needs of the industrial market.
