Broadcom's Single-Chip VDSL2/ADSL2+ Multimode Residential Gateway Solution Enables Next Generation Telecom Networks

Latest Generation Customer Premises Equipment SoC Selected by ZyXEL and Chunghwa Telecom of Taiwan for Next Generation IP Service Network Deployments

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Sept. 29 /-- Broadband World Forum 2008-- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced a new generation of xDSL customer premises equipment (CPE) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions that support the VDSL2 protocol, with seamless ADSL2+ fallback. This single-chip multimode residential gateway solution brings unparalleled, standards-based silicon and software to the industry addressing all aspects of sophisticated digital subscriber line (DSL)-based services including Wi-Fi(R), voice over IP (VoIP), Ethernet switching and IPTV.

Announced today is the Broadcom(R) single-chip BCM6368 multimode residential gateway that enables modem manufacturers and carriers to deploy high performance, future-proofed CPE solutions that support ADSL2+ or VDSL2. The new solution features PhyR(TM); the company's newly released impulse noise protection technology, multi-port Ethernet switching for video over DSL services, non-blocking 802.11n and multi-line VoIP capabilities. This integrated access device (IAD) solution incorporates a high performance MIPS(R)-based applications processor with hardware-assisted wirespeed bridging and routing, as well as hardware-assisted IPsec acceleration for virtual private network (VPN) termination, and support for USB 2.0 host and devices. With its ADSL2+ fallback capability, the BCM6368 enables carriers to deploy products in an ADSL2+ capacity and then remotely upgrade them to VDSL2 as their infrastructures allow.

The BCM6368 multimode residential gateway, along with VDSL2 central office (CO) equipment based on Broadcom silicon, has recently been qualified and selected by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) of Taiwan for mass deployment in its next generation IP services network in conjunction with ZyXEL Corporation's ZyXEL VES-1600 series and IES-5005 series next generation access products. This is the second consecutive VDSL2 CO and CPE win at CHT, and heavily leverages the software and system efforts of the prior Broadcom and ZyXEL solutions. As a result of this successful engagement, Broadcom and ZyXEL have teamed together again to provide VDSL2 IP DSLAM and CPE products to Chunghwa Telecom for its next generation VDSL2 access network. This current selection by CHT provides further market validation of Broadcom and ZyXEL's market leading VDSL2 products and the ongoing collaboration between Broadcom and ZyXEL to develop best-in-class, standards-based solutions for Ethernet aggregation, ITU G.992.1/3/5 ADSL1/2/2+ and ITU G.993.2 VDSL2 access markets.

"Broadcom and ZyXEL have long term cooperative relationship on winning CHT tenders, our superior quality and revolutionary technology enabled us to stand out from the competition and won the trust of CHT," says Dr. Yuh-Long Chen, President of ZyXEL. "Broadcom and ZyXEL's exceptionally high level product performance has once again ensured best-in-class next generation network VDSL2 central office and CPE product deployments."

"Winning CHT's VDSL2 tender for a second consecutive year is an unprecedented endorsement for Broadcom's BCM6368 multi-mode residential gateway solution," said Greg Fischer, Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Carrier Access line of business. "Achieving the best VDSL2 product rating by Chunghwa Telecom bodes well for the future market success of the BCM6368 as both ZyXEL and Broadcom will leverage this success into new xDSL opportunities around the world."

Technical Information

The BCM6368 multimode residential gateway combines a VDSL2/ADSL2+ transceiver and analog front end (AFE) with a high performance multi-core MIPS32(R) CPU, ATM/PTM hardware SAR, hardware packet processing accelerator, Gigabit Ethernet switch core with four 10/100 Ethernet physical layer (PHY) devices and dual GMII interfaces, and support for dual USB host/device connections.

The VDSL2/ADSL2+ transceiver delivers bandwidth of 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 100 Mbps upstream, enhanced quality of service (QoS) for IPTV video, dual latency framing, DSL channel bonding, and embedded operation channels for remote management of the CPE.

Powered by the advanced dual core VIPER(TM) MIPS32 CPU and hardware packet processing accelerator, the BCM6368 VDSL2/ADSL2+ modem performs wirespeed bridging, routing, encryption and decryption at any size packet, between the wide area network (WAN) and various local area network (LAN) interfaces. The MIPS32 architecture-compliant VIPER CPU also supports custom application development with industry-standard EJTAG debuggers, tool chains and development environments.
