Avocent Introduces New Serial Solutions for Data Center Management

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., January 19, 2005 - Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT), expanded its DS Series solutions again, adding three new serial over IP solutions for data center management. The CCM850, CCM1650, and CCM4850 console management appliances provide secure serial over IP access to console ports of servers and serially managed devices in the data center. These new 8, 16 and 48-port console management appliances complement Avocent DS Series KVM over IP and power management appliances to fully manage a wide range of devices such as network hubs, routers, switches, and other critical data center devices.

The CCM appliances include an AVWorks. cross-platform management application for secure remote management of serial and KVM devices in the data center. Avocent software provides click and connect access to data center devices, as well as customizable features to simplify management of individual devices. Offline history buffering, authentication, alert capabilities, and hardware break suppression distinguish the CCM console appliances from simplistic terminal servers, which are often misused for console port access.

"The addition of these CCM appliances into the DS Series product line will provide our customers with a comprehensive solution for managing both serial and KVM-based data center devices," said Gary Johnson, senior vice president of worldwide branded sales. "It's like having a virtual crash cart ready to help restore normal functionality from anywhere."

For flexible network connectivity, the 8-port CCM850 and 16-port CCM1650 offer 10/100BaseT and IP forwarding, and the 48-port CCM4850 offers 10/100/1000 BaseT support. All CCM models are based upon a Linux kernel for ease of future enhancements. Additional features to help administrators manage serial console ports include: RSA key-based authentication, SSH/Telnet host, extensive enterprise traps, server-based data logging, session sharing, and port history functionality. CCM console management appliances provide surge protection to ensure that serial ports do not fail in mission-critical environments.

AVWorks software, included with each appliance, supports most major operating systems, including Windows 2000, XP, 98, and NT, RedHat Linux and Solaris.
