Surface Mount Photodiodes sense ambient light.

Press Release Summary:

Qualified to AEC Q101 automotive standard, Models TEMD6010FX01 and TEMD5510FX01 utilize infrared filtering epoxy technology to match spectral sensitivity of human eye with minimal sensitivity to light beyond visible range. Photodiodes provide linear response to illuminance from 0.1 lux to 100 klux with lot-to-lot repeatability over extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C. Units are RoHS compliant, free of halogens, and compatible with lead-free soldering.

Original Press Release:

Vishay's New Surface-Mount Ambient Light Sensing Photodiodes are Industry's First Qualified to Automotive Standard AEC Q101; Feature Linear Response to Illuminance from 0.1 Lux to 100 Klux

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA August 24, 2007 Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) is broadening its Optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of the first ambient light sensing photodiodes qualified to the AEC Q101 standard, a reliability test qualification procedure for discrete semiconductors published by the Automotive Electronics Council.

A key component for automotive body control and passenger safety applications, ambient light sensors allow electronic systems to detect and respond to light in a manner similar to the human eye, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and reducing power consumption. They are typically used to turn on, turn off, or adjust features as a convenience, to conserve battery power, or to provide added safety. Their automotive applications include rain, light, and tunnel sensors; brightness control for dashboard and navigation displays; and automatically turning on the headlights at dusk.

The new TEMD6010FX01 and TEMD5510FX01 use Vishays exclusive infrared filtering epoxy technology to match the spectral sensitivity of the human eye with minimal sensitivity to light beyond the visible range. They also provide the benefit of having a closely similar response to either incandescent or fluorescent light, for which the TEMD6010FX01 and TEMD5510FX01 deliver excellent response ratios of 1.3 and 1.4 respectively. For comparison, a standard silicon infrared photo diode has a response ratio of 10.

The TEMD6010FX01 and TEMD5510FX01 provide a linear response to illuminance from 0.1 lux to 100 klux with good lot-to-lot repeatability over the extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C. Lot-to-lot repeatability may allow customers to eliminate calibration steps in their manufacturing process. Competing sensors are unable to match this linear response at temperature extremes, particularly above +85°C.

The new sensors join Vishays existing portfolio of ambient light sensing photo transistors, which are also qualified to the AEC Q101 standard. They are RoHS compliant, free of halogens, and compatible with lead (Pb)-free soldering. Samples are available now with lead times of six weeks. Pricing for U.S. delivery in 5,000-piece quantities is $0.66 for the TEMD5510FX01 and $0.53 for the TEMD6010FX01.
