AVX Extends Temperature Range of High Voltage, Low ESR Supercapacitors

High-power pulse supercapacitors offer highest voltages available....

Myrtle Beach, S.C. (November 16, 2005) - AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of passive components, extended the temperature range of its BestCap(TM) (Battery Energy Saving Technology Capacitor) series of electrochemical supercapacitors. The BestCap product line, which offers the highest voltages available in the industry for low ESR pulse supercapacitors, now operates in a temperature range of -40ºC to +70ºC.

Offering superior high power pulse characteristics, the BestCap electrochemical double layer pulse products are available in BZ05 and BZ06 cases, with an expanded capacitance/voltage range of 500mF/3.3V to 90mF/12V, with sub-100mOhm ESR and DCL in the range (5-40)µA. Based on a unique, patented aqueous chemistry, the design offers high capacitance, even with short pulse duration regimes such as in GSM- and PCS-based systems.

"Used in conjunction with battery packs, BestCap improves the voltage performance for high-current pulses, resulting in higher PA efficiency and longer battery talk time," said Chris Reynolds, AVX product manager.

BestCap can also be used to boost instantaneous power availability in non-battery electronic applications where low-level constant currents need to be supplemented by high current pulses, according to Reynolds.

The BestCap is ideal for applications such as RF modems, hybrid battery packs, UPS, mainframe computer decoupling, memory back-up and wireless alarm systems.

The polymer technology eliminates the need for external balancing resistors, while the low ESR results in a high current handling capability making this an ideal solution for any portable or wireless devices requiring high power availability. The availability of high voltage ratings allows a high number of power management applications to be addressed.

The BestCap line is fully RoHS-compliant, environment-friendly, and non-hazardous with superior pulse performance over alternative organic technologies. The component's ultrathin construction offers designers high energy per volume.

Pricing for BestCap starts at $3.50 in quantities of 1,000. For more information on AVX's BestCap technology, contact AVX Sales and Marketing at 801 17th Avenue South, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29578; by calling 843-946-0414; by fax 843-626-5186; or on the web at www.avxcorp.com.
