Struthers-Dunn Reintroduces Flash Transfer Relay with GOLD Serrated Contacts


With the energy saving design of an all LED intersection, the total current draw for the entire intersection can be under 5 Amps. Frequently the FTR switches less than 1 Ampere. An intermediate design of an FTR using a “serrated” gold diffused contact has been offered by Struthers-Dunn, to help prevent low current problems during the transition to LEDs.



The proven silver/palladium alloy contacts known for long-life when switching high current “Tungsten” lamp loads have now been optimized for use with low current LED lamps. The improvement includes “serrated” gold diffused contacts over the original silver/palladium base material. These additions optimize performance at the low currents. The gold is diffused into the contact at high temperature, not “flashed” on, and hence will not burn off during switching. The serrations give the low current, multiple high current density “hotspots” which will burn off any contamination such as oxides or dirt on the contact.

A green LED and light-pipe have been incorporated in the relay to show “voltage on” indication when 120VAC has been applied to that relay coil. The bright LED light has been brought to the front of the relay by a plastic light-pipe, enabling the visual indication of applied coil voltage to be viewed, even in bright sunlight, from the front of the cabinet. This feature will minimize down-time when trouble shooting in the control cabinet and show when transfer voltage has been applied to the Flash Transfer Relay.
