Transition Networks Expands Industrial Switch and Media Converter Line with Managed Switches for Industrial Ethernet

Company Also Adds Enhancements to Portfolio of Unmanaged Industrial Switches and Media Converters

MINNEAPOLIS, April 17 -- Transition Networks Inc., the conversion technology and switching expert, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc., today announced the introduction of its new, SNMP-managed switches designed for industrial Ethernet applications. In addition, Transition Networks is also announcing a number of feature and model enhancements to their portfolio of unmanaged industrial switches and media converters. Both the managed and unmanaged ruggedized devices are designed to reliably operate in harsh networking environments found on factory floors, outdoor enclosures or other hazardous environments and are backed by an unsurpassed lifetime warranty.

"As the proliferation of Ethernet-based networking continues to expand into remote or mission-critical hazardous locations, the ability to remotely manage these devices takes on increased importance," said Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing at Transition Networks. "The addition of SNMP-managed industrial-grade switches helps Transition Networks continue to offer our customers increased flexibility in solving their end-to-end networking challenges."

Managed Industrial Switch Product Features

The 8-port managed industrial switch series delivers superior management features via SNMP management for secure configuration and monitoring, including SNMP and SMTP email trap support. Network traffic can be optimized and managed via port-based bandwidth allocation, port-based VLAN, 802.1Q VLAN tagging, IGMP snooping with query mode, 802.1p 4-level priority queuing, port trunking, port mirroring and packet filtering. Additional managed features include DHCP client support, SNTP clock synchronization, TFTP firmware update with system configuration restore and backup functions.

Critical communication needs are protected with the various redundancy features incorporated into these managed switches allowing for increased reliability and system uptime. Redundant path communication is protected via redundant ring switching technology with switching times of less than 300 milliseconds as well as supporting spanning tree (STP) and rapid spanning tree (RSTP).

To complement the redundant ring technology, the switches include coupling ring support for connecting multiple redundant rings in a network as well as dual homing support to ensure continuous connectivity to the core switches in the network. Redundant, auto-sensing, dual power supply inputs supporting 12- 48vdc provide instant fail over support in the event of a failure of a main power supply with both SNMP trap and relay contact closure notification.

Each switch has a rugged metal enclosure which carries an IP31 rating. DIN rail bracket mounting and wall mount brackets are also included with each model.

Unmanaged Industrial Media Converters and Switches Product Features

Transition Networks has recently completed an enhancement to its unmanaged Industrial Media Converter and Switch product lines. Enhancements include:

-- New port configurations resulting in new models to better align with industry needs
-- New ruggedized enclosure and relocation of the power inputs to the bottom of each device for an improved ingress protection rating of IP31
-- Addition of switch selectable converter mode or switch mode for the industrial media converter models offering increased installation flexibility for multiple applications
-- DIN rail and wall mount brackets included - no need for ordering additional line items

The new enhanced models will be fully compatible with the previous industrial models and will continue to carry Transition's unique lifetime warranty. In addition to feature enhancement, Transition's new unmanaged industrial product line also includes a revised, industry-competitive pricing structure with list prices starting at $265.00.
