Rexam's Convenience Format for Rieber Foods Launch

Capitalising on the growth in convenience foods, Rieber Foods, Norway has launched a new range of single serve, microwaveable soups under the Trondhjems Brand in plastic bowls supplied by Rexam. Rieber is one of the largest food producers in the Nordic region and is committed to taste and product development leadership and the bowl concept, already well established in the USA, was seen as the perfect solution for the range.
A multi-layer, high barrier Polypropylene construction, the bowls can be filled, closed with an easy open metal end and then retorted on existing canning equipment in Rieber with only minor modifications. The product can then be stored at ambient temperature before consumption providing the shelf life convenience of canned food and the heating convenience of ready made dishes.
Rexam is the largest producer of this type of container globally with a market share of greater than 50% in the US and is building a facility in the UK to supply the rapidly growing European market. Unique, Rotary Thermoforming technology for production of the containers leads to unrivalled temperature barrier properties and stability through processing. Rexam was also able to help Rieber with sourcing the sleeve, overcap and metal ends to complete the pack.
The Trondjems range of Casserole stew, Chunky Soup and Spanish Soup has been well received by Nordic retailers and will be followed by further launches through 2006.
