Original Press Release:

IBM RXE-100 Remote Expansion Enclosure - Add Massive I/O Scalability to Your Enterprise with Second-Generation Enterprise X-Architecture

Overview
Based on innovative, second-generation Enterprise X-Architecture(TM) (EXA) technology, the IBM RXE-100 Remote Expansion
Enclosure lets you expand the I/O capacity of your EXA server as your business grows. It is no longer necessary to purchase an expensive, high-capacity server infrastructure to support your future I/O expansion needs.

By using a building-block design, this high-density, rack-drawer enclosure allows you to "pay as you grow" with six Active (hot-swap) PCI-X adapter slots standard, and support for six additional slots. Grow your network as your requirements increase with XpandOnDemand scalability.

Performance and scalability for e-business
The RXE-100 Remote Expansion Enclosure delivers massive I/O
scalability while supporting PCI-X architecture and adapters running at up to 133 MHz.
o Six, full-length, 64-bit PCI-X slots standard - Supports up to six adapters: three adapters each operating at 133 MHz or six
adapters operating at 100 MHz or less. Six 133 MHz adapters may
be installed operating at 100 MHz.
o High-speed data transfers
o Directly interfaces to an IBM eserver x365, x445, or x455
o Optionally available Remote I/O PCI-X 6-slot Expansion Kit for 2RX
- Grow expansion with six additional full-length, PCI-X, 64-bit
slots

High availability and system management
The RXE-100 Remote Expansion Enclosure delivers the "bulletproof" reliability and control required of mission-critical datacenter applications.
o RXE management controller - Interfaces with the service
processor in the host eServer® x365, x445, or x455 to monitor critical components
o Hot-swap redundancy:
- Two 370-watt power supplies standard
- Four cooling fans
o Light path diagnostics - Improves uptime by simplifying maintenance
o One-year on-site, limited warranty

Flexibility and investment protection
Rack-dense design and XpandOnDemand scalability enable high-density installations for today and room to grow for tomorrow's
needs.
o Flexibility
- 3 U x 28-inch form factor - Allows dense installation in
industry-standard racks.
- With all 12 slots installed, one RXE-100 can be shared
between two supported EXA servers to increase datacenter
flexibility and to optimize slot count per server.
- Can be attached up to 8 meters from the host IBM eserver xSeries® EXA server.
o Investment protection
- Expansion of PCI-X slots in 6-slot increments - Up to 12 slots, or a total of 18 PCI-X slots when attached to a supported xSeries EXA server
- Supports 64-bit PCI and PCI-X adapters ranging in clock
speeds from 33, 66, 100, or 133 MHz

Key prerequisites
Installation of an RXE-100 Remote Expansion Enclosure requires
attachment to a second-generation xSeries EXA server such as the x365, x445, or x455 and supported rack.

At a glance
