Ultra-Compact Twido® Programmable Controllers From Schneider Electric Simplify Machine Control

Modular components deliver flexibility for custom control designs

NORTH ANDOVER, MA. - June 21, 2002- Schneider Electric has integrated the two most common formats for nano programmable logic controllers into a single platform with the introduction of TWIDO, a new line of small, high-performance controllers that reduce the cost of automating small machines.

TWIDO's design, comprehensive range, expansion capabilities and accessories make it one of the most powerful and versatile small controllers on the market today.

Available in both modular (book) and compact (brick) formats, TWIDO controllers share a single range of I/O expansions, option modules and Microsoft-based programming software for maximum design flexibility. Easy to wire, easy to install and easy to program, this new family of controllers makes it simple for OEMs and control panel builders to put more capabilities into a smaller footprint.

The modular TWIDO packs 40 I/O into a body smaller than a business card (1.42 inches wide by 3.54 inches high by 2.78 deep), yet is customizable with a range of expansion modules for over 200 analog and discrete I/O points. The all-in-one compact model, with 10 to 24 I/O, comes with its own 120VAC power supply and can be expanded to 88 I/O.

Both TWIDO bases integrate advanced functions which provide the flexibility usually found only in larger PLC platforms, such as fast up/down counters, time delays, permanent data backup and RS-485 Modbus master/slave communication port.

Optional plug-in accessories make it easy to add an operator display, memory cartridges, real-time clock or communication adaptors, depending on the requirements of the application. An EEPROM memory option allows easy transfer of program updates to other TWIDO controllers, while the small operator display can be used as a local adjustment tool that can be transferred from one CPU to another.

Programming is performed using the Windows-based TwidoSoft(TM) software in List and Ladder languages. These languages, which conform to standard IEC 1131.3, are mixable and reversible. The software uses the same objects and instructions as the current PL707 software for other small Schneider Electric controllers, allowing existing PL707 programs to be imported using an ASCII file.

The controller's snap-together modules and accessories require no tools for assembly. A range of wiring options-spring-type terminals, removable screw terminal blocks and pre-wired cabling - also simplify control panel assembly and increase reliability.

Ideal for small stand-alone applications and compact machines, these ultra-compact controllers can be used in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications, including palletizers and other material handling applications, compressors, cutting machines, elevators, fun/pump control, access control and automatic doors, car washes, industrial laundry, light control and other small machines.
