Toshiba Expands Media Player LSI Product Line with Two New Single-Chip CD-MP3 Processors for Car-Audio Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 16 /-- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced two new highly integrated, high-performance CD-MP3 processors that enable playback of CD and multiple compressed audio formats from a single IC. Designated TC94A70FG and TC94A73MFG, the new devices expand Toshiba's portfolio of semiconductor products for automotive applications. They are aimed at car-audio as well as consumer-audio applications. Both devices integrate all necessary CD and audio processing features plus 1Mbit of SRAM and can decode up to four audio compression formats. TC94A73MFG is a system-in-package (SiP) version that adds electronic shock protection (ESP) to the feature set of TC94A70FG by incorporating built-in firmware and 16Mbit DRAM memory.

"TC94A70FG and TC94A73MFG make it possible for engineers to design an economical family of high-performance, compressed audio CD players that meet a broad range of car- and consumer-audio product profiles," said David Cruikshank, business development manager in the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. He further elaborated that "a single design can be customized to create an entire product portfolio through the built-in programmable RAM, pin compatibility between standard (TC94A70FG) and ESP (TC94A73MFG) versions and the firmware capability to decode up to four audio compression formats." He added that the new ICs complement Toshiba's other ICs used in car and general consumer media players, including microcontrollers, motor drivers and audio power amplifiers.

TC94A70FG and TC94A73MFG incorporate a CD servo and RF amplifier that control the CD spindle, pick-up head laser, and motor driver and amplify the RF signal generated from the reflection of the laser off the CD surface. A built-in CD DSP performs error correction and demodulation of the PCM/EFM signal while compressed audio content is decoded by a separate integrated audio DSP. The final audio signal can be output in digital I2S format or analog stereo from the built-in multi-bit DA converter.

Technical features common to both ICs include the following, while TC94A73MFG also includes 16Mbit DRAM and firmware for ESP:

o Incorporates CD servo and head RF amplifier with built-in DA converter
o Features compressed audio decoder
o Benefits from extensive, growing decoder firmware library that includes
MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Layer 3 (MP3), Windows Media(R) Audio 9 (WMA9), Adaptive
TRansform Acoustic Coding (ATRAC(R)) CD, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC),
graphic equalization and surround-field effects
o Has a 1Mbit SRAM buffer with low standby current of 10uA maximum
o Offers pin compatibility between the ESP (TC94A73MFG) and non-ESP
(TC94A70FG) versions
o Features programmable RAM for software customization
o Integrates one I2S input and three I2S outputs plus an S/PDIF connection
o Offers a 6-line 4-bit parallel interface and a 4-line serial interface
for direct connection to a microcontroller
o Housed in Lead(Pb)-Free(1) 100-pin LQFP pin-compatible packages
