New SLC Retrofit for Boiler Control Available from MicroMod Automation

ROCHESTER, NY MicroMod Automation, Inc. announces the introduction of SLC RETROPAK Series process controllers designed to replace Bailey's legacy SLC product line recently discontinued by ABB, as well as older CLCs.

"Product development became a top priority for MicroMod Automation given the reliance on SLC by thousands of industrial and institutional boiler facilities and other plants around the world," said Richard Keane, company president.

MicroMod Automation purchased the SLC spare parts and servicing business from ABB as part of a larger acquisition of ABB¹s advanced control business including MOD and Micro DCI lines of control products. SLC (Strategic Loop Command) controllers originally were manufactured by Bailey Controls, and later produced and sold by ABB.

"The SLC RETROPAK Series has been designed to eliminate a serious dilemma for boiler house managers who have been searching for a cost-effective migration path to replace these discontinued controllers," said Robert Anken Jr. P.E., vice president-project engineering, MicroMod Automation. "Until now, the only choice was to start from scratch and remove all SLCs at a considerable capital expenditure. Now, individual peer groups of controllers can be replaced one boiler at a time."

The SLC RETROPAK Series is based on a choice of MOD 30ML or Micro DCI control platforms that offer the critical functionality of the SLCs they are designed to replace.

SLC RETROPAK (MOD 30 ML version) includes a library of standard SLC function codes. Development services also are available from MicroMod Automation for functions not included in the library. Additional capabilities not available in the SLC controller include flexible I/O, enhanced output holders, open communications, dual communication networks and multiple control loops.

In a typical upgrade, retrofitting is facilitated by Modbus connectivity to the Foreign Device Interface (FDI) in the INFI 90 process control unit or MicroMod¹s Extended Modbus OPC server. In many applications, three SLC RETROPAK controllers can perform the same functionality of six SLCs.

Facility managers will have the option to purchase SLC RETROPAK on a trade-in basis or maintain displaced SLCs in a spare parts inventory. SLC RETROPAK is available for purchase from MicroMod Automation representatives, distributors and solutions providers listed on the company website, micromodautomation.com. Customers may also contact MicroMod Automation at 585-273-6270 to inquire about factory-direct sales and application support.

MicroMod Automation¹s corporate office is located in Rochester. NY. The company will soon open its new engineering center in Southampton, PA. South American operations are conducted by the company¹s subsidiary, MicroMod Automation de Mexico, S. de R.L.
