Eching/Munich, Germany, September 24, 2009 - On the Intel Atom Day, staged on September 23 in Munich's Allianz Arena, Kontron demonstrated the latest features of Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3, officially published one day earlier, as well as previewing an advance version of Windows Embedded Standard 2011 (the successor to Windows XP Embedded/Windows Embedded Standard 2009), underscoring the extremely fast response in implementing new operating system functions.

Fast-reacting and comprehensive software support is an extremely important competitive factor for developers, especially when adding features that enable new applications to be created. The interesting features of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 include: low-resource Internet Explorer Embedded, Silverlight for Embedded implementation, Adobe FlashLite 3.1.0 support, plus innovative touch and gesture support, which show the way to entirely new interactive and networked x86 applications.

In the upcoming Windows Embedded Standard 2011, which will be based on Windows 7, developers are rewarded with all the performance, familiarity, and reliability of a Windows operating system in component form. For manufacturers, it will mean easier design of smart, networked devices with ambitious applications, services, and user experience. Windows Embedded Standard will exhibit connectivity with a variety of common industrial standards, enhanced by Microsoft's desktop and server technologies. This way, developers can save costs in application programming, in producing an operating system, and in servicing and maintenance.

Developers were already able to test the new releases on two alternative embedded computer platforms based on the Intel Atom processor: Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 on the Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP computer-on-module, and Windows Embedded Standard 2011 on the 2.5-inch pico-ITX single-board computer Kontron pITX-SP.

Further to Windows CE, Kontron's Intel Atom-processor-based platforms also add up to support for all other relevant operating systems from hard real-time OS through to GUI-based OS like VxWorks, QNX Neutrino, Linux (including the real-time kernel), plus the Windows OS family, 2000, XP, XP Embedded, and Vista. That means solutions are now in place to suit all areas of application and vertical markets, underscoring the universality of computer-on-modules, SBCs, and motherboards.
