TI Delivers Highly Efficient, 3-A Plug-in Power Module in Tiny 12 mm x 10 mm Package
DALLAS (Oct. 29, 2004) -- Texas Instruments today announced a highly integrated point of load power module that supports up to 3-A of output current and is smaller than a standard TO-220 linear regulator. The new PTH04070W plug-in power module eliminates the need for a heat sink, providing up to 94 percent efficiency to support low-voltage point-of-load power requirements of DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs and microcontrollers used in telecommunications, networking equipment, instrumentation and high-end consumer products. TI's PTH04070W allows operation from either a 3.3-V or 5-V input bus. Leveraging TI's advanced switch-mode DC/DC topology, the module can efficiently convert a 5-V input bus down to 0.9 V with less than 1 W of power dissipation. Power density is an industry leading 160 W per cubic inch. The output voltage can be adjusted to any voltage from 0.9 V to 3.6 V using a single external resistor.

The PTH04070W module comes in a double-sided, horizontal through-hole or surface-mount package that measures 12.3 mm x 10.2 mm x 3.5 mm. The power modules are now available in volume production from TI and its authorized distributors. Pricing per module in quantities of 1,000 is $4.28. Lead (Pb)-free & RoHS-compatible versions will be available in the first quarter of 2005.
