Rockwell Automation Introduces Allen-Bradley® E1 Plus Electronic Overload Relays

MILWAUKEE, Dec. 15, 2003 - Designed to meet the critical demands of general use industrial applications, the new Allen-Bradley® E1 Plus Electronic Overload Relays from Rockwell Automation deliver superior versatility and high-performance motor protection in a rugged design that is easy to install, operate and maintain. As part of its market-leading Power Control Solutions portfolio, the E1 Plus relays are offered in both NEMA and IEC configurations to meet worldwide application requirements.

The self-powered design and direct contactor mounting of the E1 Plus relays simplify installation and operation. The relays provide exceptional application flexibility with standard AC15/B600-rated isolated N.O. and N.C. contacts.

The electronic design of the E1 Plus overload relays helps ensure accurate, reliable and repeatable motor protection. Traditional overload relays pass motor current through simple heating elements to simulate the dynamic thermal properties of motor temperature increases. Thermal modeling in the E1 Plus is performed electronically with precision solid-state components including an application-specific integrated circuit, or ASIC. The ASIC continually processes motor current data to accurately maintain the time-current status of motor loading. Additionally, a thermal memory circuit allows the E1 Plus relays to model the heating and cooling effects of motor on and off periods, ensuring accurate protection for both hot and cold motors.

The second leading cause for motor failure is phase loss. With a dedicated phase loss detection circuit, the E1 Plus relays deliver reliable, highly responsive phase loss protection. Whereas traditional overloads can take up to 40 seconds to respond to a phase loss condition, the typical reaction time for the E1 Plus is three seconds.

The superior functionality afforded by the electronic design of the E1 Plus overload relay is complemented by its rugged mechanical design. Rockwell Automation's exclusive insert molded power connections provide a sturdy two-component starter assembly that is unmatched in the industry. Contactor-to-overload interconnection is further enhanced through a base latching mechanism. Mounting the overload relays in a control panel with the relay base flush with the contactor base results in improved starter stability.

Featuring the industry's widest FLA setting range, 5:1, one relay device spans the range of up to four bimetallic devices or 19 heater elements, simplifying selection and increasing application versatility. A wider adjustment range means fewer current ranges and greater installation flexibility for dual-voltage machines. The EE version offers DIP switch settings for trip class (10, 15, 20 or 30) and reset mode (manual or automatic/manual)-resulting in one device with six possible operation modes.
