Optical Refrigerator Defrost Controller reduces energy usage.

Press Release Summary:

To conserve energy, Ice*Meister(TM) Model 9734-REFR minimizes frost accumulation on evaporator coils and fins of commercial walk-in refrigerators, reach-in refrigerated display cases, and other self-defrosting chiller systems. Product works by sensing interaction between molecules of accumulating frost and photons of light and then operating defrost heaters only when frost is present. Control can be installed on any refrigerator at factory or retrofitted in field.

Conserves energy by energizing defrost heater when-and-only-when frost is actually present.
Mature optical technology originated in NASA-tested aircraft ice sensors.
Suitable for OEM factory installation or aftermarket retrofits.

Fort Lauderdale FL -- New Avionics Corporation here announces a new optical defrost controller for commercial walk-in refrigerators and reach-in refrigerated display cases, and other self-defrosting chiller systems in supermarkets, restaurants, school cafeterias, convenience stores, and refrigerated display cases for sushi, pastries, gelato, ice cream, and other delicious foods.

Ice*Meister(TM) Model 9734-REFR Optical Defrost Controller minimizes FROST accumulations on refrigerator evaporator coils and fins; promises huge energy savings.

FROST is a major concern in the food-service industries because frost is a thermal insulator that forms out of thin air, and accumulates on refrigerator coils and fins. Frost interferes with proper heat transfer. Every time a refrigerator door is opened and closed, outside air enters. The outside-air humidity can be higher than that of the refrigerated air inside, and so dew can appear and freeze on the refrigerator's internal components.

Frost is normally removed by a defrost heater, which gets hot and melts the frost away. But applying heat inside a refrigerator is counter-productive to keeping the food cold, so defrost heaters should be energized as little as possible.

The problem is that defrost cycle control is normally under control of primitive electro-mechanical timer clocks. There may be little or no relationship between the application of defrost heater energy and the frost which it is supposed to eliminate. This causes a wasteful disparity between refrigerator defrost cycles and the function they are intended to accomplish.

In the interest of sustainability, energy conservation, social responsibility, and reduced operating cost for commercial interests, insulating frost on refrigerator coils should be reduced as much as possible, limited, and prevented from even forming in the first place.

By replacing primitive defrost timers, new Ice*Meister(TM) optical de-frost heater control helps reduce, limit and prevent all insulating frost. NASA-tested Ice*Meister(TM) works by sensing the interaction between molecules of accumulating frost and photons of light. It conserves energy by operating defrost heaters when and only when frost is present, whereas primitive timers can be hit-or-miss. The quantified amount of energy to be saved depends on a number of local variables, including time of the day, ambient humidity, temperature, season of the year, staff diligence, local customs, etc.

In operation, Ice*Meister(TM) senses the very earliest appearance of frost on refrigerator coils (see figures B & C). As soon as frost appears, Ice*Meister(TM) signals the compressor to turn OFF, and the heater to turn ON. This signal immediately begins to melt away offending frost. As soon as the offending frost has been melted away and removed, Ice*Meister(TM) signals the heater to turn OFF and turns the compressor to turn back ON again. The refrigerator then returns to normal operation, with its defrost controller sweeping back-and-forth across the frost-formation threshold, and actively keeping the condenser coils frost-free.

Ice*Meister(TM) can be installed on any refrigerator at the factory, or retrofitted in the field as an aftermarket product. It eliminates all moving parts, reduces parts count, reduces cost to manufacture, improves reliability, and saves Megawatts of electricity, worldwide. Ice*Meister(TM) controls any refrigerator's defrosting system to sweep back and forth across the ice formation threshold in real time.

This boosts efficiency in four ways: (1) It eliminates defrost cycles when there is no frost to be removed. (2) It initiates defrost cycles immediately as frost appears on evaporator coils. (3) It terminates defrost cycles immediately as offending frost is removed. (4) It minimizes heat inside refrigerators.
