Rockwell Automation Distributes I/O Well within Reach of Welding Applications

On-Machine I/O blocks with protective shell help improve equipment life span and productivity

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio, Aug. 10, 2006 - Equipment used in automated welding applications tends to suffer shorter life spans due to harsh environmental conditions. To address this problem, Rockwell Automation has added Armor WeldBlock to its Allen Bradley 1732 ArmorBlock product line. 1732 Armor WeldBlock units are distributed I/O blocks that combine I/O circuits, a power supply and network adapters into a single, sealed IP69k housing. This lightweight, space-saving digital I/O block is ideally suited for On-Machine mounting and designed to withstand the demanding operating environment of typical welding applications.

"Armor WeldBlock delivers the same space-saving and usability found in our line of On Machine solutions, with the added durability of a nickel-plated aluminum housing to protect the I/O," said Mark Eitzman, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "Customers that distribute On-Machine I/O in welding applications will help improve their productivity, with a product specifically designed for the weld cell."

As part of the ArmorBlock product line, Armor WeldBlock provides industrially hardened blocks of 24V dc digital I/O that can be mounted directly on equipment near sensors or actuators. Placing I/O directly on the machine reduces wiring, streamlines troubleshooting with highly visible LEDs and eliminates the need for an expensive cabinet or junction box, lowering overall system costs.

The sealed IP69k metal housing of nickel-plated cast aluminum resists the effects of weld slag-a byproduct of the welding operation-and magnetic fields created by high currents at weld points found in close proximity to the weld head. In addition, the protective housing is lighter than other similar I/O products, meaning it is ideally suited for end-of-arm robotic applications.

Rockwell Automation provides additional solutions for the welding environment, including ToughWeld patchcords and ToughWeld proximity sensors, each specifically designed for premium performance in harsh, demanding welding environments.
The 1732 Armor WeldBlock, available for shipping in August 2006, is compatible with DeviceNet at launch, with an EtherNet/IP version available shortly thereafter.
