UltraFlex Induction Soldering a Connector Within 1.5 Seconds
UltraFlex Power Technologies - a leading manufacturer of digitally controlled induction heating solutions - recently demonstrated the time and cost-efficiency of induction soldering.
In this demo case requested by a potential customer, wires had to be reliably soldered to each other. The soldering had previously been done using a soldering iron, but the customer was looking to optimize that process in terms of time and costs as well as completely automate it.
The recommended induction equipment for this test case was the SB-3/1200 power supply along with an HSB-3 heat station. The induction systems from the ULTRAHEAT SB Series are high frequency induction heating units, operating at a frequency of 700 kHz to 1.2 MHz and suitable for soldering and brazing small components and parts such as circuit board connectors, RF Connectors and cable end connectors. For the purpose of this test, the unit was run at a high frequency of 985 kHz so as to couple into the small diameter of the wires.
At power output of up to 0.48 kW and a target temperature of 392°F (200°C), the entire soldering process - from turning on the unit to solder hardening - took a little more than 1 second.
In addition to being faster and more cost-efficient, the process could also get completely automated and used on an assembly line, because the system can remotely be turned on. Finally, this induction soldering process had been completely safe, both for the operator and the environment, with no waste heat and noxious emissions.
