Original Press Release:

Kontron KISS 1U Short: a New Range of Mini Industrial Servers with Reduced Installation Depth

Defying their extremely compact format, the new mini-servers feature two expansion slots

Eching, Germany, July 21, 2009 - Kontron's new 1U mini-format industrial server range Kontron KISS 1U Short feature a 25 percent reduced installation depth. Despite their extremely compact format they offer the latest multicore processor performance, two SATA hard disks with optional RAID functionality and two PCI expansion slots for customer-specific expansion options.

The new Kontron small form factor industrial servers have an installation height of 44mm and are just 350 mm in depth, leaving enough space in the back of the rack for installing cables and dock-on devices. The most important electronic components, such as the embedded motherboard and the RAID controller are engineered and manufactured by Kontron, ensuring optimized system performance and reliability. Thanks to the modularity of Kontron's KISS 1U Short mini-servers, which have long-term availability of at least 5 years, the system is configurable and scalable according to users' needs. The ready-to-go configurable Kontron KISS servers eliminate the need for many expensive, custom designs efforts, which may also be subject to high minimum order quantities, extensive compatibility testing or special certification efforts. Kontron has completed the testing already to give customers drive, graphics and other I/O options to fit the functionality and price/performance needs of the application.

The new mini industrial servers target applications such as: communication infrastructure, automation, process control, industrial image processing, medical technology, transportation or building automation. Additionally, the Kontron KISS 1U Short industrial mini-servers can be applied as media-servers for digital signage applications. The low-noise emission of only approximately 35 dbA enables these new mini-servers to be put to work in noise sensitive areas.

The feature-set of the first Kontron KISS 1 U Short 986 Mini-Server
The first mini-server in the Kontron KISS 1U Short product family comes with Kontron's own Mini ITX embedded motherboard Kontron 986LCF-M/mITX and is equipped either with 1.86 GHz Intel Celeron processors or 2.0 GHz or 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Up to 4 GBytes of DDR2 SDRAM also contribute to the high system performance. The Kontron KISS 1U Short feature 4 x USB 2.0 interfaces on the front and 3 x Gbit Ethernet, 4 x USB 2.0 along with serial and VGA interfaces at the rear. Customer-specific expansions can be carried out via two 32 bit Half-Size PCI expansion slots. Hard disk access via SATA is extremely fast and due to the shock-resistant internal 3.5" slot it is also extremely secure. Additionally, on the front side, the Kontron KISS 1U offers slots for a 3.5" hard disk and a slim DVD drive. The optional Kontron KISS Stor Slim RAID 1 subsystem with two hot-swappable 2.5" hard disks offers additional data security. Connected via one power and one SATA cable it is easily installed and maintainenced. As an alternative to the integrated 80+ AC power supply, a 24 VDC power supply solution can also be used.

Thanks to the high MTBF of 30,000 hours (approximately 3.4 years of uninterrupted service), Kontron's latest industrial mini-servers guarantee highavailability while at the same time ensuring low maintenance costs. The extremely quiet and hot-swappable fans are easily exchanged. High shock and vibration resistance make these low maintenance Kontron KISS 1U Short servers ideal for deployment in rugged environments. The front cover can be locked and offers IP20 protection. Optional slide rails simplify the installation of the Kontron KISS 1U Short. The compact systems are designed for continuous operation, they are CE certified and designed to meet UL. The Kontron KISS 1U Short server in standard configuration is available for immediate delivery in EMEA and in late 09 in the North America, or can be configured with the necessary components to fit exact customer requirements and is then certified as a complete system.

The long-term available Kontron KISS 1U Short industrial servers support Linux and Windows XP.
