Microchip Technology Announces New High-End 8-bit PIC® Microcontrollers With More Features at a 30% Cost Reduction

PIC18F8622 Microcontroller Series Has Extra Serial Ports, nanoWatt Technology and Faster ADC

CHANDLER, Ariz., Oct. 24, 2005 [NASDAQ: MCHP] - Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, today announced a new series from its PIC18F high-end 8-bit microcontroller family that has an extra serial port for expanded connectivity and a faster analog-to-digital-converter (ADC) for quicker measurement - all at a 30 percent lower price than the previous generation. Through nanoWatt Technology, the sleep current is 40 percent lower, and the operating current is more than 50 percent lower, over previous generations. This combination of cost-effectiveness, features and performance is ideal for a wide variety of applications, such as battery-powered, industrial and consumer products.

Design engineers are faced with ever-increasing demands for processing power and connectivity, while simultaneously facing the challenge to lower power consumption and overall system costs. The new PIC18F8622/8527/6622/6527 series of microcontrollers provides high performance with its 10-bit, 100 ksps ADC; extended communication with two synchronous and two asynchronous serial ports; and longer battery life through nanoWatt Technology and an 8 MHz internal oscillator. Additionally, the PIC18F8622 is compatible with Microchip's world-class MPLAB® development tools and has excellent C-code efficiency.

"The PIC18F8622 series completes the migration path for nanoWatt Technology from 48 to 128 Kbytes of Flash in Microchip's popular PIC18F family of high-end 8-bit microcontrollers," said Mitch Obolsky, vice president of Microchip's Advanced Microcontroller Architecture Division. "Due to a significant improvement in sleep current, this new microcontroller series is well suited for the complex portable applications of the 21st century."

Microchip's general-purpose 8-bit microcontrollers are used by thousands of customers across hundreds of application areas. While the possible uses for the PIC18F8622 series are quite broad, here are a few specific examples: Industrial (HVAC, communications control, battery-powered instrumentation); Consumer (white-good appliances, battery-powered electronics).

Additional key features of the PIC18F8622 series include:
o 48 or 64 Kbytes of Flash Program memory, 4 Kbytes of RAM and 1 Kbyte of EEPROM
o 2 Enhanced USART and 2 I2C(TM) or SPI(TM) serial communication ports
o 2 Standard and 3 Enhanced Capture/Compare/PWM Modules
o 2 Comparators
o 2 8-bit and 3 16-bit Timers

Development Tools
The PIC18F8622 maintains compatibility with Microchip's free MPLAB IDE integrated development environment, and the world-class MPLAB C18 C compiler, MPLAB ICD 2 in-circuit debugger and emulator, and the MPLAB PM3 universal device programmer. In addition, the PICDEM(TM) HPC Explorer Board (part # DM183022) was created specifically for evaluation and development with Microchip's high-end PIC18F 8-bit microcontroller family.

Availability
All four members of the PIC18F8622 series are available today for general sampling and volume production. The PIC18F8622 and PIC18F8527 are available in 80-pin TQFP packaging, while the PIC18F6622 and PIC18F6527 are available in 64-pin TQFP packaging.
