NEC Electronics Introduces 32-Bit V850E2/ME3 Microcontroller for High-Performance, Real-Time Processing

Most Advanced V850 Microcontroller Enables Performance of 400MIPS at 200MHz

KAWASAKI, Japan, SANTA CLARA, Calif. and DUESSELDORF, Germany, Feb. 14 -- NEC Electronics today introduced the V850E2/ME3(TM) microcontroller, a 32-bit single-chip RISC controller ideal for systems that require high-performance, real-time processing such as inverters, industrial equipment, printers and digital consumer products. The V850E2/ME3 chip is the latest addition to NEC Electronics' popular V850(TM) microcontroller family, which has an industry-leading track record of more than 400 million shipments worldwide.

The V850E2/ME3 microcontroller features the new V850E2(TM) CPU core that enables superior processing speeds of 400 million instructions per second (MIPS) at up to 200 megahertz (MHz), made possible by the V850E2 controller's superscalar architecture and seven-pipeline structure (upgraded from the five-pipeline structure previously used in the V850E1(TM) CPU core). The V850E2 microcontroller also enables 90 percent improvement in processing speed over previous versions with its simultaneous processing of two instructions sets using a single clock.

The 168-kilobyte (KB), high-speed instruction RAM, which is 40KB more than the previous core, as well as an 8 KB instruction cache and 8 KB data cache, enable real-time processing of large data volumes, making the V850E2/ME3 microcontroller ideal for printers and other applications that require high performance.

The V850E2/ME3 device offers an extensive lineup of peripheral functions, including a full-speed USB 2.0 interface, and incorporates an SSCG (spread spectrum frequency synthesizer clock generator) function that can reduce the peak value of electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise by more than 10 decibels (dB).

Additionally, the new microcontroller offers the advantage of full pin compatibility with previous V850 microcontrollers, allowing customers to bring products to market more quickly and with lower development costs. In addition to hardware compatibility, the V850E2/ME3 controller also offers compatibility with software and with peripherals such as timers and high-speed interfaces.

"In recent years, there has been a surge in demand for high-performance microcontrollers as the inverters used in air conditioning systems, the graphics-rendering systems used in printers and other applications become increasingly complex," said Minoru Matsuda, general manager, Multipurpose Microcomputer Division, NEC Electronics Corporation. "We are proud to be able to offer one of the highest-performing 32-bit microcontrollers available on the market today."

NEC Electronics will continue to pursue development of high-performance microcontrollers based on the V850E2 core, including solutions that enable execution of 800MIPS. The company will also continue to refine its offerings in development tools and middleware to improve functions such as networking and graphics processing, which will face growing demand in the market.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the V850E2/ME3 microcontroller will be available March 1, 2005, at an expected price of US$22. Volume production is scheduled to begin during July 2005, and monthly production volumes are expected to reach 200,000 units per month by March 2006. Pricing and availability are subject to change without notice. For further information about the V850 series of products, visit www.necel.com/micro/english/v850/index.html.
