Temperature Sensor Input Module Further Expands Versatility of Allen-Bradley® MicroLogix(TM) 1200 Controller

1762-IR4 module delivers cost-efficient, highly accurate temperature measurement

MILWAUKEE, May 6, 2003 - Rockwell Automation has introduced a sensor module that allows users to directly interface the Allen-Bradley® MicroLogix(TM) 1200 controller to platinum, nickel, nickel-iron and copper resistance temperature detectors (RTD). This 1762-IR4 four-channel RTD module significantly expands the application spectrum of the MicroLogix controller. In addition, the 1762-IR4 module also reduces system costs by eliminating expensive RTD-to-analog transmitters.

"Our customers are looking to simplify and streamline the number of devices required for small machine control," said Lonnie Frey, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "By eliminating the need for expensive thermocouple transmitters, the 1762-IR4 input module enables MicroLogix 1200 users to achieve a cost-effective and compact means of temperature measurement and control."

The 1762-IR4 module provides temperature readings in degrees C or degrees F with measurement resolution down to tenths of degrees. As a result, the module is ideal for industrial and process control applications, such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, utility and transportation, where precise temperatures are required.

The module's sensor temperature range (-200 to 850 degrees C) provides superior accuracy (+/- .05 degrees C) over thermocouples. Users also can select from several temperature scaling options and engineering units to save controller memory and improve performance. It is factory-calibrated and can be programmed to perform auto-calibration to maintain accuracy.

"The feature-rich 1762-IR4 module offers our customers programming efficiencies and greater application flexibility," said Frey. "By limiting the number of available channels to four, the module provides enough channels to meet a wide range of applications while achieving superior temperature measurement accuracy at a low cost."

The four-channel module is compatible with existing MicroLogix 1200 controllers and requires no update to hardware, firmware or software. The module can interface with two-, three-, or four-wire RTDs, and users can individually configure each channel with various sensors, reducing the learning curve and spare parts inventory. It also allows users to select, on a per-channel basis, from six different input filter frequencies based on the electrical environment that best meets the performance needs of the application.

The 1762-IR4 module provides over- and under-range alarms with individual bit feedback per channel to the controller. This eliminates the need to program the logic in the controller, saving memory and improving performance. Plus, the module's open circuit/broken wire detection and reporting mechanisms improve overall system reliability.
