Rockwell Automation Upgrades Standard Operating System on Allen-Bradley VersaView CE Industrial Computers
Microsoft Windows CE.NET adds functionality, improves flexibility of VersaView CE industrial computer line
MILWAUKEE, Feb. 9, 2004 - To meet customer needs for expanded application versatility, Rockwell Automation has added the Microsoft Windows CE.NET operating system to its line of Allen-Bradley VersaView CE industrial computers. Available as an upgrade for current VersaView CE users, Windows CE.NET is now the standard operating system used on this line of industrial computers. Included with this change are a number of file viewers which offer additional document viewing and Web-browser capabilities for increased operator efficiency.
"With new enhancements like the viewers, users can do much more with the VersaView CE than they have in the past," said Don Steffens, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "The added functionality really helps stretch your operator interface investment dollars."
The file viewers that VersaView CE users can now access includes Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and MPEG files. With these viewers in place, manufacturers can store machine manuals and drawings on VersaView CE terminals located on the plant floor. This eliminates the need for machine operators or maintenance workers to have large manuals or a laptop computer for troubleshooting or repair. They can now call up the files on the nearest VersaView CE instead.
In addition, training engineers can incorporate training videos stored as MPEG files along with manuals and drawings on the same VersaView CE used for machine control.
In addition to accessing files stored on the VersaView CE, users can view files such as manuals or drawings that are located on a separate server. This is particularly useful when there are multiple machines needing access to the same data.
Another new feature is the ability for the VersaView CE to function as an FTP server allowing users to send or receive files from a remote location, for example - a quick and easy solution for production office operators who want to download a new manual or instructions to individual units on the plant floor.
The Allen-Bradley VersaView CE Industrial Computers will begin shipping with Windows CE.NET starting in February 2004.
