I/O Modules do not degrade Wavebook measurement bandwidth.

Press Release Summary:

Models WBK40(TM) and WBK41(TM) provide measurement capabilities for Ethernet-based 1 MHz WaveBook/516E(TM) by adding up to 224 thermocouple inputs. WBK40, 14-channel thermocouple modules have on-board, 16-bit, 200 kHz A/D converters that measure TC inputs synchronously with WaveBook's 1 MHz measurements. Multifunction WBK41 modules, similar to WBK40 modules, include 14 thermocouple inputs, but also offer 40 digital I/O lines, 4 counter inputs, and 2 timer outputs.

New Thermocouple Input and Multifunction I/O Modules

Modules offer high-speed capability to WaveBook/516E

CLEVELAND, March 3, 2003 - IOtech, Inc. has added two products that provide unique measurement capabilities for the new Ethernet-based 1-MHz WaveBook/516E(TM). The new WBK40(TM) and WBK41(TM) were developed to add up to 224 thermocouple inputs, while not degrading the measurement bandwidth of the WaveBook. A common problem with waveform measurement equipment is as more channels are added, the per-channel sampling rate goes down and reduces the per-channel bandwidth substantially. This is particularly common when thermocouple (TC) inputs are added, because the number of TC channels is commonly very high compared to the number of high-speed channels.

The new WBK40 Series circumvents this problem by having an on-board 200-kHz A/D, which measures the TC inputs synchronously with the WaveBook's 1-MHz measurements. The net result is the ability to make high-speed measurements, synchronous with slower-speed TC measurements, all within the same compact, Ethernet-based system.

WBK40
The WBK40 is a 14-channel thermocouple module that attaches to any of the three parallel expansion ports on the WaveBook/516E. Because of its built-in 16-bit, 200-kHz A/D converter, thermocouple measurements do not consume valuable sampling time from the WaveBook's 1-MHz A/D converter. The SYNC connection between the WBK40 and WaveBook/516E insure that thermocouple measurements on the WBK40 are synchronized with higher-speed measurements on the WaveBook.

The built-in TC channels on the WBK40 can accept any type of thermocouple to the mini TC connections on the front that makes hookup quick and easy. The unit can be expanded in 14-channel increments using the DBK84(TM) TC expansion module. A total of 15 DBK84s can be attached to one WBK40, for a total TC channel capacity of 224 channels - with no degradation to the WaveBook's 1-MHz bandwidth.

WBK41
The multifunction WBK41 module is similar to the WBK40 by including 14 thermocouple inputs, but also provides 40 digital I/O lines, 4 counter inputs and 2 timer outputs. It can also be supplied with the DBK46(TM), an internal, 4-channel, 16-bit, 100-kHz analog output option. The built-in 16-bit, 200-kHz A/D in the WBK41 converter insures that valuable sampling time is not consumed from the WaveBook's 1-MHz A/D converter. Measurements with the WBK41 are made synchronous with the WaveBook, providing precise time correlation between readings from both measurement devices.

TC channels are built in and are easily accessed via the mini-TC connectors on the front panel. The counter/timer functions and 16 bits of digital I/O are accessed via removable front panel screw-terminal connectors and additional digital I/O expansion connectors are located on the back.

The WBK41 can be easily expanded beyond its built-in channel capacity. A maximum WBK41 can access up to 224 TC input channels, 272 digital I/O channels, 4 analog output channels, 4 counter input channels and 2 timer output channels. As with the WBK40, a system configured with a WaveBook and WBK41 have a single high-speed Ethernet link back to the PC for continuous data transfer.
