SMC Expands its Gigabit Switching Portfolio with a 1RU 48-Port TigerSwitch

Press Release Date: 12/04/2003

IRVINE, CA - December 4, 2003 - SMC Networks (www.smc.com), leading provider of networking solutions for the Enterprise, the SMB and all the way home, today announced its newest Gigabit backbone switch, the TigerSwitch(TM) 10/100/1000 48-Port Managed Switch (SMC8648T). The new high density, high performance SMC8648T switch will be available in early January, at an MSRP of $4599.

The new SMC8648T switch has 48 fixed 10/100/1000 ports, four of which can be upgraded with optional mini GBIC expansion slots for fiber connections. Compact and efficient, despite its high port count and advanced features, the SMC8648T is the ideal solution for any enterprise workgroup or backbone switching application. At its best in challenging, high-traffic environments, the SMC8648T races ahead of the pack to move data at speeds up to 96Gps; up to 9K in jumbo frame support mode.

The TigerSwitch SMC8648T not only delivers high performance, it's loaded with advanced features that demanding environments need. In addition to RADIUS, 802.1x, SSH and SSL for security, the new switch offers complete Layer2/3/4 switching with traffic prioritization, including DSCP-based CoS and TCP/UDP Port-based CoS and, as well as port and protocol-based VLANs. For more powerful management applications, this TigerSwitch also offers rate limiting, Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)-all configurable through an intuitively-designed Command Line Interface (CLI). Built for robust workgroup and backbone switching today, the SMC8648T also has the flexibility to allow for upgrades to even more features that will be released in the future, including SNMPv3, Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (802.1s) that allows single spanning tree within VLANs, and Access Control List (ACL). "This powerful, high-density switch was designed to excel in the most demanding networks," said SMC Product Marketing Manager, Jennifer Wu. "As the majority of desktop computers and servers are integrated with Gigabit over copper interfaces, the TigerSwitch is designed to be part of a server farm's infrastructure. Its security, performance and management features make it ideal for Gigabit to the desktop applications, too. Attractively priced at under $100 per port, the TigerSwitch meets the fast growing market demand for affordable, high-performance Gigabit over copper."

The TigerSwitch SMC8648T10/100/1000 Managed Switch is available in early January, at an MSRP of $4599. Uplinks and redundant power supplies are also available, at MSRPs $200 to $2807.00.
