Overview
IBM TotalStorage® SAN Switch and Director offerings now include mainframe FICON(TM) switching support with the 2109-M12, and bring to market the high-availability Enterprise Director offering highlighted in IBM's Statement of Direction in May, 2003. Refer to Hardware Announcement 103-133 , dated May 13, 2003. Enterprise Director FICON support is available at no additional cost to new and existing IBM SAN Director 2109-M12 installations under service, using the firmware 4.1.2 upgrade.

The latest enhancements for the IBM M12 SAN Director include FICON switching, Open/FICON intermix, and FICON Director cascading between two Directors. These enterprise enhancements are added to the M12 SAN Director's array of high-availability capabilities, including concurrent code load, nondisruptive code activation, enhanced control processor fail-over, call home management, and advanced security. The Model M12 SAN Director is designed for future enhancements, including FICON Control Unit Port (CUP).

This release introduces the bundling of "Fabric Manager 4.1 with 10 Domains" onto all future 2109-M12 initial plant orders, with the option to upgrade to "Fabric Manager 4.1 with Max Domains." This two-step tiered offering adds flexibility and attractive potential savings for new hardware purchases of the IBM M12 SAN Director. This release also introduces two optional features for the 3534-F08, "Fabric Manager V3 Max Domains" and "Fabric Manager V3 to V4 Upgrade Max Domains."

New extended distance fiber optic transceivers for the 2109-M12 and 2109-F32 are now available, designed for operation with distances up to 35 km and 80 km, respectively. These new extended distance transceivers help disaster tolerance solutions without the need for separate gateway integration.

New no-additional-cost cabinet integration optional features are introduced for the 2109-C36. When configured with one 2109-M12 Director, the 2109-C36 is designed to support from one to three 2109-F16 and from one to two 2109-F32 SAN Switches.

Description
IBM TotalStorage SAN Director 2109-M12 highlights

IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch and Director offerings now include mainframe FICON switching support on the 2109-M12, at no additional cost to new and existing IBM SAN Director 2109-M12 installations currently under service, using the firmware 4.1.2 upgrade. The latest enhancements for the IBM 2109-M12 SAN Director include FICON switching, Open/FICON intermix, and FICON Director cascading between two Directors, as well as the following:

Hardware Enforced FICON/FCP Port Zones
Enhanced RAS and Call Home Support
ISL Trunking with Self Optimizing Traffic Management
Enhancements to Fabric Binding

These enterprise enhancements are added to the M12 SAN Director's already comprehensive array of high-availability capabilities, including concurrent code load, nondisruptive code activation, and enhanced control processor fail-over. Secure Fabric OS activation helps provide greater security and is required to run FICON on the IBM SAN Director in cascaded mode.

Open/FICON intermix allows operation of FICON and Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) open systems simultaneously on a single Director fabric. FICON Director cascading helps provide extended distance between two Directors for disaster tolerance solutions. ISL Trunking with Self Optimizing Traffic Management is designed to improve performance and high availability in cascading environments.

The IBM M12 SAN Director is designed for future enhancements, including FICON Control Unit Port (CUP). Currently IBM M12 SAN Directors operational with FCP and FICON may be managed using the following control interfaces:

CLI
Webtools
Fabric Manager
SNMP
Fabric Access API (CIM)

This release introduces the bundling of "Fabric Manager 4.1 with 10 Domains" onto all future 2109-M12 initial plant orders, with the option to upgrade to "Fabric Manager 4.1 with Max Domains." This two-step tiered offering adds flexibility and attractive potential savings for new hardware purchases of the IBM M12 SAN Director. Fabric Manager 4.1 introduces additional management controls supporting FICON operation on the 2109-M12, including the following enhancements:

o Flexible security and policy administration improvements

o Enhanced RAS and Call Home features to support FICON

o No-cost upgrade for Fabric Manager 4.0 installations under service
