FEV Demonstrates TraCE Transmission Calibration Tool at 2015 SAE World Congress

FEV TraCE, part of the TOPexpert Suite of calibration tools, enables analysis of shift strategy and shift quality; enhances overall transmission calibration

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - FEV North America, Inc. (FEV) a leading developer of advanced vehicle systems and powertrain technologies, will feature a component of its TOPexpert suite of calibration tools, at the 2015 SAE World Congress, April 21 - 23 at Cobo Center in Detroit, this time focusing on transmission calibration. The Transmission Calibration Expert (TraCE) is a framework for model-based transmission calibrations featuring extensive graphical analysis for shift strategy and shift quality evaluations and calibrations.

The shift analyzer module of TraCE is a model-based tool for application of shift strategy. Key parameters such as shift points, shift hysteresis, vehicle acceleration, wheel torque and torque converter behavior can be analyzed and visualized.  It allows internal TCU shift map interpolation, which enables the development engineer to analyze calibrated shift points and compare different modes in one coherent view. Gear changes can be analyzed for the actual target up/down shift speeds of the system, which prevents gear toggling. TraCE also offers simulation and drive cycle scenarios that enable the analysis of overall vehicle behavior, and fuel consumption can be predicted in arbitrary cycles.

Shift quality evaluation and calibration is performed using a model-based approach. The gear shift is automatically evaluated, and objective shift metrics are calculated for the shift event. These values can be automatically loaded into a matrix and compared to target values.  Additionally, information for individual shift phases is available.  Automatic color coding of the classification matrix quickly visualizes if calibration targets are met. With this approach application engineer can focus calibration on critical areas in respect of shift quality.

FEV's TraCE is freely configurable and the user can integrate additional drivability metrics. With this open model-based tool approach, the calibration remains transparent and comprehensible.
