D-Link Extends xStack Family with New Managed Wireless Gigabit Switch with 10-Gigabit Uplinks

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 13 -- D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumers and business, today began shipping a new addition to its popular xStack family of SMB-class centrally managed, secure networking solutions with the DWS-3250 managed wireless stackable gigabit switch featuring 10 Gigabit uplinks.

With complete seamless integration and compatibility throughout the xStack 3200 series, the DWS-3250 deploys D-Link's Distributed Network Architecture (DNA) to provide both mobility and wired infrastructure control.

The D-Link xStack DWS-3250 is a highly scalable, centrally managed 48-Port Layer 2+ Stackable Gigabit switch with 10G uplinks and 10 Access Point (AP) licenses that fully integrate wired and wireless switching capabilities. Up to 16 of the new switches can be stacked, delivering up to 768 gigabit ports.

It also provides powerful wireless security, rogue access point detection and centralized management for all compatible wireless LAN components in a single 1U form factor.

"The addition of this new xStack managed wireless switch is an important step that enables IT managers to add mobile users in a centrally managed, secure and fully integrated wireless and wired infrastructure, providing a complete end-to-end network solution," said Jennifer Wu, director of product management for D-Link. "It delivers an excellent way to add mobile users who get seamless roaming between access points for clear, uninterrupted data and voice communication throughout their entire wireless and wired network infrastructure."

Wu points out that D-Link's xStack DWS-3250 switches are designed to combine the best of both networking worlds -- advanced wired functionality, high-availability, redundancy and uptime, along with centralized management of compatible wireless access points, enhanced wireless security features, seamless roaming between APs and full 802.11 support.

The xStack DWS-3250, which includes a standard 10-client AP license that is upgradeable to 25, also supports 25 APs per switch/stack with up to 1500 WLAN clients such as laptops, handhelds and other wireless devices.

Key wired and wireless features:
o 48 copper Gigabit ports, including four combo SFP ports for easy, flexible connection to fiber-based Gigabit networks or for distributed stacking
o Two module bays for 10Gb Ethernet, supporting both copper CX-4 and fiber XFP
o "Shortest Path" switching is made possible through robust stacking with centralized management for up to 16 units, providing up to 768Gb ports
o Smooth seamless roaming between compatible wireless access points guarantees uninterrupted communication by bringing AP configurations and support directly into the switch itself, allowing user PDAs, VoIP phones and other mobile devices to retain their VLAN membership and IP addresses.
o Automatic discovery and configuration of APs, with real-time monitoring and logging of wireless users and devices
o Wireless management features include rogue AP detection and containment, dynamic WLAN load balancing, automatic discovery and configuration of APs, and real-time monitoring and logging of wireless users and devices
o Enhanced security for both wired and wireless users, including Layer 2, 3, and 4 ACLs, guest and private VLANs, 802.1x user authentication, and WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption
o Signature-based attack detection ACLs that automatically detect and block common Trojans and Denial of Service attacks
o Enterprise-class networking and management features include cross-stack 802.3ad Link Aggregation, DNA-redundant fail-over stacking, rapid and multiple spanning tree support, SNMP management, and RMON and port-mirroring support
o Optional redundant power supply for reliable, continuous operation.

Enhanced Security

To ensure user protection against hackers and other unwanted network intrusions, the xStack DWS-3250 supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption and provides secure network logins with 802.1x authentication. Rogue AP detection and containment ensure that only the APs installed by the user are functional.

To further meet the growing demand by SMB and SME customers for a total unified networking solution, D-Link also announced an affordable solution for adding wireless connectivity to existing Ethernet networks. The company now offers 10 or 25 wireless Access Point (AP) licenses (DS-710 and DS-725, respectively) as software upgrades for its popular xStack DXS-3250 "wireless-ready" switches.

According to the latest report from In-Stat, a leading industry research firm, the SMB market is now primed to take greater advantage of enterprise networking features because of reduced prices of managed LAN switches and advanced WLAN hardware and software. In-Stat expects revenues from the sale of managed LAN switches to grow by nearly 30 percent in the next four years.

"Advanced 802.11 standards for wireless local area networks (WLANs) are allowing network managers to cut through earlier enterprise deployment barriers such as security, roaming, centralized management and, above all, costs," said Wu.

Pricing and Availability

The xStack DWS-3250 is available through D-Link's network of value-added resellers (VARs), solution providers, direct market resellers (DMRs) and D-Link's online store, www.dlinkshop.com. Manufacturer's suggested retail price for the DWS-3250 is $5,499.99, about a third of the cost of competitive non-integrated switches.

The DXS upgrade software (DS-710) with 10 licenses is $799.99; the DS-725 version is $1,749.99. D-Link APs are compatible with both the DXS-3250 and DWS-3250 and range from $139.99 to $349.99 MSRP.
