Siemens Makes It Simple To Use Profinet With New ASIC ERTEC 400 Processor

Development Kit Offers Everything to Get Started

ATLANTA (October 18, 2005) - Siemens Energy and Automation has reduced the time and effort it takes to reap the benefits of PROFINET Isochronous Real-Time Ethernet (IRT), with the new ASIC ERTEC 400 Enhanced Real-Time Ethernet Controller.

Equipped with a 4-port switch and a 32-bit microprocessor, the ASIC ERTEC 400 combines real-time communication for high-speed control of all Ethernet communications, including TCP/IP. With a 1 millisecond cycle time, and less than 1 microsecond jitter, as many as 150 axes may be simultaneously controlled in motion control applications.
The processor is integrated in the Siemens CP 1616 card for PCs; SCALANCE X200-IRT Industrial Ethernet Switches for configuring Ethernet networks in line, star, and ring topologies; and SIMOTION D motion control systems. Device manufacturers may also use the ASIC ERTEC 400 to incorporate PROFINET technology in their products.

"The ASIC ERTEC 400 is a certified processor that minimizes PROFINET development times and test scenarios," said Ralph Buesgen, Siemens PROFINET manager. "We offer all the features and tools to make it simple to use PROFINET, including built-in diagnostics based on web technologies."

A development kit package is available for the ASIC ERTEC 400 that includes everything required to develop a PN I/O device, including hardware, driver, demonstration programs, and documentation.
