Emerson Enhances Communications Platform within Ovation® Expert Control System to Improve Performance with Field Device Protocols

Power generators to have more robust digital bus communications and flexibility to optimally work with current and future fieldbus protocols

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 29, 2006) - Today at POWER-GEN International 2006, Emerson Process Management announced that it has enhanced the communications architecture within the Ovation® expert control system to improve performance with field device protocols.

The Ovation system now features a standardized communication platform. This new platform leverages the power of the Ovation controller to enhance performance with Foundation(TM) fieldbus, DeviceNet(TM) and PROFIBUS DP industry standard communications protocols. This standardized platform which uses industry-leading communication technologies, yields a more robust, tightly coupled solution that offers a number of benefits, including better fault tolerance, improved throughput and easier troubleshooting. The new bus platform also has the capability to seamlessly incorporate emerging protocols - such as PROFINET and EtherNet/IP - as they become more widely adopted, as well as new protocols developed in the future.

Based on the results customers have experienced with its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, Emerson is a staunch supporter of a digital bus-based approach to automation. The Ovation control system is a key technology that powers PlantWeb, which utilizes high-speed communications networks, intelligent field devices, asset management software, and bus I/O technologies to help power producers control critical plant processes, increase plant efficiencies and megawatt production, and realize long-term operations & maintenance savings. PlantWeb also contributes to reduced startup and commissioning costs for new plant construction projects.

"As a strong proponent of digital automation, Emerson is committed to arming our customers with the latest bus technologies," said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. "By offering a bus platform that offers integrated communications capabilities for existing - as well as future - protocols, we are helping to ensure that our customers are able to fully realize the economic and operational advantages of deploying a digital bus-based architecture today and well into the future, as these technologies continue to evolve."
