Distributed I/O System offers plug-and-play functionality.

Press Release Summary:

Combining I/O modules, power distribution, and device integration, Telemecanique® Advantys® STB System allows one fieldbus node to distribute I/O across entire machine or process. Systems can be remotely monitored through built-in Ethernet web server or locally monitored at I/O level via embedded serial port. Modules distribute field power across sensor bus and actuator bus, which are isolated from one another. All I/O modules are automatically addressed and recognized.

Schneider Electric Simplifies Distributed Control with Advanced Modular Distributed I/O and Device Integration System

NORTH ANDOVER, MA - December 12, 2003 - A modular distributed I/O system that integrates I/O modules, power distribution, and device integration into a single design that reduces engineering, wiring and connectivity costs has been introduced by Schneider Electric. The innovative Telemecanique® Advantys® STB system makes it possible for only one fieldbus node to distribute I/O across an entire machine or process.

A broad range of communication network interface modules (NIMS) allow the Advantys STB system to serve as an interface with standard fieldbuses including Modbus TCP/IP. Systems can be remotely monitored through a built-in Ethernet web server or locally monitored at the I/O level via an embedded serial port that can provide local HMI connection. The Advantys STB backplane enables direct connection of many Schneider Electric devices as well as third party CANOpen devices, reducing the need for hardwiring of special function devices such as motor starters and drives. This makes it easier to integrate devices and saves both time and money during design and implementation.

Advantys STB's power distribution modules distribute field power across two separate buses - a sensor bus for input modules, and an actuator bus for output modules. These buses are isolated from one another to allow outputs to be managed independently from inputs. Separate integrated fuse protection on each bus eliminates the cost and space required for external circuit protection. Hot swap capabilities mean maximized productivity and reduced downtime, allowing failed I/O to be replaced without interrupting the functionality of other I/O on a network.

Using reflex functionality, Advantys STB enables high-speed logic solving at a local level that is independent of the PLC master. This local reflex functionality improves performance for time critical operations by reducing the logic load on the PLC.

The plug-and-play functionality of Advantys STB means no special tools are needed during installation and all of the I/O modules are automatically addressed and recognized. It offers high granularity for ease of distributing I/O, offering 2, 4 or 6 I/O. This is a particularly valuable feature for machine builders because this enables them to purchase the exact mix of I/O required for their applications.

Intelligent configuration software allows users to visually build a system and set functionality through a graphic interface. This software assists users through every phrase of the product lifecycle, from product selection through system implementation and maintenance. Integral diagnostics built in through software and LEDS on the modules offer a quick and easy way to locate faults.

Wiring costs are significantly reduced with Advantys STB. The reduction in wiring due to the placement of I/O closer to the sensors and actuators they control provides over 50 percent savings in wiring and installation costs, while delivering higher reliability due to fewer connections and potential points of failure. In addition to fieldbus connectivity, removable connectors allow for quick and easy commissioning through pre-wiring of cables, eliminating the need for on-site labor to make these connections. Terminations at the module eliminate the need for marshalling strips.
