Digital Transmitter/Receiver has modem emulation capability.

Press Release Summary:

Model FT232BM USB/RS232 UART converts legacy serial devices to USB connection and includes forced Xon/Xoff mode built into software drivers. Modem Emulation is setup in .INF file or via properties page for FTDI's Virtual COMport drivers. It allows modem emulation to be performed by driver when attached device is not a standard modem, allowing binary data to be transmitted or received when using XON/XOFF software protocol.

Original Press Release:

FT232BM USB/RS232 UART Now with Modem Emulation

Fairport, New York. FT232BM - FTDI's popular digital i.c. for converting legacy serial devices to USB connection - now offers a unique modem emulation capability. Forced Xon/Xoff mode - now built into the free software drivers - is exciting news for designers of mobile phone PC data cables, or any other device that requires emulating modem behavior.

Modem Emulation is a special driver mode that can be setup in the .INF file or the properties page for FTDI's Virtual COMport drivers (which let the PC think it's talking to a conventional serial port, but via the USB connector). Its purpose is to allow modem emulation to be performed by the driver when the attached device is not a standard modem, allowing binary data to be transmitted or received when using XON/XOFF software protocol.

Many standard applications require the DCD line to recognize an internet connection (e.g. dial-up networking). This can be XON/XOFF or hardware RTS/CTS handshaking. Because XON/XOFF handshaking uses data characters automatically inserted into the data stream to perform flow control, the transmission of binary data is not normally practical because the XON/XOFF characters may appear in the raw binary data and cause the receiving side to erroneously stop or start transmission. The new FTDI drivers cleverly solve this problem!

FT232BM has been discovered by manufacturers worldwide keen to upgrade older serial designs to USB with minimal development and cost, since no-problem royalty-free USB drivers are supplied for Windows '98/xP/2000, Linux and Mac OS-8/9/X.

FT232BM is available now from $3.50 (1000) from FTDI's USA distributors:
