DC/DC Converters deliver VRM9.1 compliant CPU power management.

Press Release Summary:

Models NXI100 and NXI150 non-isolated, point-of-load DC/DC converters power Intel's Xeon(TM) and Pentium 4 processors. They deliver up to 75 A continuous, 81 A peak at user-programmable voltage from 1.10-1.85 V using standard 5-bit VID codes. Both operate from nominal 12 V input. Multi-phase synchronous rectification techniques with interleaving achieve switching frequency of 1MHz. Converters feature typical efficiencies of 85-87% and come in PCB-pluggable forms.

Advanced Point-of-Load DC/DC Converters Deliver Versatile, VRM9.1-Compliant, CPU Power Management for Computer OEMs

o pluggable converters provide VRM9.1 solutions for Intel Xeon(TM) and Pentium 4 systems
o components address high density and low-profile server applications

Eden Prairie MN, April 3, 2003 --- Artesyn Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ NM:ATSN) today launches two high-current, point-of-load DC/DC converters for powering Intel's Xeon(TM) and Pentium 4 processors. Delivering up to 75A, and compliant with the latest VRM9.1 specifications, the converters employ multi-phase techniques for advanced performance, and come in PCB-pluggable forms to assist computer OEMs in creating flexible products that may be upgraded in the field.

The NXI100 and NXI150 non-isolated, point-of-load (POL) DC/DC converters, are capable of delivering up to 75A continuous, 81A peak at a user-programmable voltage from 1.10V to 1.85V using standard 5-bit VID (voltage identification) codes. Both operate from a nominal 12V input.

Multi-phase synchronous rectification techniques, with interleaving to achieve a high effective switching frequency of 1MHz, maximizes power conversion performance and ensures a fast transient response. The converters have typical efficiencies of 85 to 87%, and accommodate load transients of up to 50A/µs with full recovery in less than 50µs, for example.

Multiple converters can be paralleled for very high current applications, using an active current sharing circuit to maintain current balance under both static and dynamic load conditions. This 'democratic' approach to current sharing obviates the need for expensive master/slave configurations.

NXI150 and NXI100 converters have no minimum load requirement, are comprehensively protected against under-voltage and short-circuit conditions, and have an operational temperature range of 0 to +60°C ambient. An enhanced 'power good' feature improves system reliability by monitoring the output voltage and each phase of the converter for correct operation, and differential remote sense facilities are provided for improved load regulation. The converters additionally offer a remote on/off facility.

An open-frame, single-board construction is utilized to minimize cost and weight, and to simplify thermal management. The converters make extensive use of surface-mount components and the latest thermal packaging techniques to help maximize power density and reliability, and are designed for vertical plug-in to a standard motherboard connector - with or without a retention latch.

When mounted on a motherboard, the NXI150 occupies an area of less than 2.2in² and extends vertically by 2.6 inches, the NXI100 occupies an area of less than 3.2in² and has a height of just 1.15 inches. Both converters support the computer design trend away from 5U or 7U high computer enclosures, towards lower-profile, rackable systems with heights of 2U or 1U. Moreover, they meet these profile targets despite offering the flexibility of a pluggable form-factor.

Artesyn is a recognized leader in the VRM market and these processor-power POL converters are the latest in a new generation of technologically advanced products that the company is developing for the rapidly-expanding non-isolated point-of-load converter market. Meeting or surpassing Intel's voltage regulator module (VRM) specifications, advanced circuit design principles deliver industry leading efficiency combined with low implementation costs. In conjunction with the use of pluggable form factors, the NXI series provides developers of servers and workstations with versatile power management solutions that are both simple and economic to design-in.

The NXI converters are available now, with a standard lead time of stock to 8 weeks. In small quantities, NXI150 is priced at US$45; NXI100 is priced at US$49.
