Dataforth Introduces isoLynx® SLX718 Data Logger/Data Acquisition System

Unrivaled Flexibility and Performance in Miniature Size

Dataforth Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, has just introduced the isoLynx® SLX718 data logger/data acquisition system, composed of compact SLX718 units and Dataforth's miniature SensorLex(TM) 8B isolated analog signal conditioners. The versatile family of SLX718 instruments created by the combination offers stand-alone or PC-tethered data logging operation. Moreover, the flexibility to change I/O on a per channel basis for each of eight signal conditioner locations, in conjunction with the very small size and low cost, is unrivaled in the marketplace.

Instrument versions are differentiated by packaging, interface type, and PC-tethered or stand-alone data logging operation. There are three packaging options:
o SLX718N NEMA 4 (IEC 529, IP 66) Enclosure
o SLX718B Benchtop Enclosure
o SLX718S Skeleton PCB-Board-Only for OEM/Embedded Use

Interface options are USB or Ethernet. SLX718 instruments purchased with the stand-alone data logging option feature a built-in multimedia socket that accepts standard Secure Digital (SD) memories, which can store acquired data without a connected PC. SD memory cards are the same commonly available mass storage devices used with digital cameras and MP3 players; memories are supported that range in size from 16MB to 1GB. SLX718 instruments without stand-alone capability must remain tethered to a PC's USB or Ethernet port during data acquisition and use the PC's own program and memory to store acquired data.

The fully isolated 8B modules provide the SLX718 family with Instrument Class® performance in a package 20% the size of competing modular products. Up to eight 8Bs - of any input type - can be installed directly into the SLX718 unit, thereby allowing signal conditioning functions to be mixed and precisely matched to each application, ensuring an advanced signal conditioning solution for nearly any industrial measurement.

Dataforth teamed with Dataq Instruments to create the isoLynx® SLX718 data logger/data acquisition system, which incorporates Dataq's popular WinDaq software. Together, the WinDaq-driven SLX718 unit and the Dataforth 8B modules create the smallest data logger/data acquisition instrument on the market offering the advanced features of this system. In addition to the benefits provided by the 8B's flexibility and size, these features - in both stand-alone and tethered versions -include:
o High resolution 14-bit analog to digital conversion
o Programmable channel scan list
o Programmable sample rate throughput, ranging from milli-Hertz to more than 14,400Hz
o Built-in remote control jack
o USB or Ethernet interface options

Stand-alone data logger versions of the SLX718 are the first in their price range to offer data acquisition server capability. Acting as a server allows stand-alone instruments to locally and independently add data to their SD memories, and then make that acquired data available upon demand. Ethernet stand-alone units allow data acquired to their SD memories to be uploaded via the Ethernet interface. With stand-alone non-networked instruments, SD memory can simply be removed physically, transported to a reader on another computer, and uploaded for review and analysis.
Stand-alone data logger units stream data to their removable SD memory cards at a maximum sample throughput rate of 14,400 samples per second; the minimum sample throughput rate is 6.2 samples per hour. For PC-tethered instruments, the maximum sample throughput rate is 4,800 samples per second, and the minimum throughput rate is 0.048 samples per second.

PC-tethered versions of the SLX718 are designed for use anywhere an instrument can remain connected to a laptop or desktop PC. The SLX718 USB option requires the PC to be local to within 5 meters (15 feet), while the Ethernet option allows the PC to be used either locally or remotely (up to 100 meters without hubs). As PC-tethered versions must communicate constantly with the host without latencies, dedicated networks are recommended for PC-tethered Ethernet versions. Applications for PC-tethered SLX718 instruments include:

Data acquisition for industrial monitoring and recording in maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control measurements, such as:
o Load cells for strain, force, torque
o Voltage ranging from millivolts to 60V
o 4-20mA process current loops
o RTDs and thermocouples

Design applications requiring mechanical and/or electrical measurements, including:
o In-vehicle automotive testing
o New product qualification testing
o Agricultural equipment testing
o Electromechanical timing and amplitude measurements

Stand-alone versions of the SLX718 can be used for the same applications as PC-tethered versions. They are specifically designed for those who cannot locate a PC near the instrument; want easy, efficient access to remotely recorded information over their Ethernet LAN; want to record 24-7-365, or want remote, Ethernet-accessible data without the time and cost of installing a dedicated network.

The SLX718N is housed in a NEMA 4 (IEC 529, IP 66) industrial junction-box enclosure designed to protect it against harsh industrial environments. The isoLynx® system is mounted on standoff legs on a removable 14 gage inner galvanized steel panel. The enclosure is constructed with 16 gage steel and measures 25.44H x 20.32Wx 10.16D centimeters (10H x 8Wx 4D inches). It is compliant with UL 508 Type 3R, 4, 12, 13; CSA Type 3R, 4, 12, 13; NEMA Type 3R, 4, 12, 13; and IEC 529 and IP 66 standards.

The SLX718B for benchtop use is housed in a small 15.11D x 10.57Wx 4.06H centimeters (5.95D x 4.16Wx 1.6H inches) enclosure consisting of an aluminum base, all-steel wraparound, and aluminum end plates.

The SLX718S skeleton pcb-board-only for OEM/embedded use consists of fully tested printed circuit boards individually sealed in a conductive poly-bag.

All SLX718 instruments are supplied with dual, removable, 16-position screw terminal connectors to provide access to the built-in 8B module backplane, which can accommodate up to eight signal conditioning modules. All are powered from any 9-36VDC source

In sum, the special features of the SLX718 unit and the 8B isolated signal conditioning modules combine to produce a robust instrument that can be applied to virtually any industrial data acquisition or data logging situation, especially those that require a rugged, amplified, isolated solution.
Prices for SLX718 instruments start at $595.
