Datastick Introduces First Complete Data Acquisition System on Rugged Palm Powered(TM) Handheld: New mDAS-2233 Runs Datastick Connection(TM) Software on Meazura(TM) Handheld

The Datastick® mDAS-2233 data acquisition system, the first complete sensor-based data acquisition system to run on the ruggedized Palm Powered(TM) Meazura(TM) handheld, was announced at the Instrumentation of Society's ISA Expo 2003 in Houston today by Michael Scandling, Vice President, Marketing, Datastick Systems, Inc. The mDAS-2233 running Datastick Connection(TM) software provides a complete PDA-based instrument for ruggedized industrial, scientific and environmental applications.

The mDAS-2233 consists of the specially designed, rugged, waterproof Palm OS® Meazura(TM) handheld computer from Aceeca Ltd. of Christchurch, NZ, plus a three-channel data acquisition module for analog-to-digital conversion. The device is designed and constructed to withstand a 4-foot drop onto a concrete floor and is waterproof to IP67 standards. A wide variety of active analog sensors can be connected to the module, which provides analog-to-digital conversion and signal conditioning.

Measurements are recorded and displayed using one of the Datastick Connection suite of software products. Datastick Connection displays measurements in real time in four different views. Datastick Connection Plus adds alarms and level-sensitive recording. Both provide linearization algorithms to compensate for nonlinear sensors. Datastick Connection Pro software permits higher-speed data acquisition in capture-and-review mode.

"This is the first in a line of test and measurement products for the Meazura platform," said Scandling. "With the rugged mobility of the Meazura handheld, many new markets for PDA-based test and measurement can now be served by Datastick."

The data acquisition module has three analog inputs and has a Delta-Sigma analog-to-digital converter with 22-bit resolution with a sample rate of up to 100 samples per second. Its input range is +10 to 10 volts.

"A purpose-built, rugged Palm-based mobile computer for data acquisition is the 'hard-hat' Palm handheld that our customers have wanted for a long time. Datastick started a new paradigm in the test and measurement field and this new product, combined with our software, raises the bar and broadens the market in a single stroke," said Steve Sabram, CTO and President of Datastick Systems, Inc.

The mDAS-2233 handheld computer features a Motorola Dragonball 33 MHz CPU and 16 MB of on-board memory. It can send recorded data to a PC by means of Palm's HotSync® technology, where it can be read into PC applications such as Microsoft Excel.

"We're very happy to partner with Datastick Systems. Datastick Connection software is a perfect compliment to our Rugged Digital Assistant. Together we are able to expand the ability to serve the needs of industry, government, and scientific agencies to monitor things like vibration, displacement and temperatures and provide mobile in-the-field measurement solutions for a wide range of industries, including agriculture, automotive, aviation, geology, machinery maintenance and medical," said Alex Topschij, Aceeca CEO.

Datastick is offering the mDAS-2233 for $489. Datastick Connection software, required for its operation, costs from $100 to $275, depending on the title.

Datastick Systems, Inc., developed the first general-purpose data acquisition hardware and software system for the Palm platform, and today is a leader in the design and development of cost-effective handheld instrumentation products for Palm Powered handhelds for a broad range of commercial, scientific, governmental, environmental and educational markets.
