Rockwell Automation's New MCS Plus Line Enhances Motor Protection and Control Capabilities

Modular, compact design of Allen-Bradley MCS Plus line simplifies selection, installation and maintenance of motor control components

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 7, 2002 - OEMs and panel builders who need compact, high-performance motor control and protection solutions will benefit from the variety of components that comprise the new Allen-Bradley Modular Control System (MCS) Plus line from complete automation leader Rockwell Automation. The new MCS Plus family expands current offerings with new components, enhanced motor protection and control capabilities, and increased ratings ranging from 5A through 1200A. All MCS products are designed for electrical and dimensional coordination, which simplifies panel layout, assembly and makes it easy for users to meet a wide range of application needs with fewer components.

Motor control and protection components within the MCS Plus line include circuit breakers, contactors, overload relays, mounting systems and configuration software that simplify integration and design.

"The MCS Plus fills an immediate market demand for compact, highly reliable motor control solutions for applications above 85 amps," said Jeff Battani, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "The wide range of product sizes and enhanced capabilities of the MCS Plus line give users greater design flexibility and enables them to more closely match motor control and protection components to specific application requirements."

Packing high-performance in a compact, modular design, MCS Plus products offer simple and flexible installation with a choice of mounting options, including panel mount, standard bus bar, and exclusive ISO(TM) (Isolating) bus bar configurations. All MCS Plus products meet global standards and certification requirements. Individual components within the line include:

Bulletin 140M Motor Protection Circuit Breakers offer expanded motor protection (up to 300 hp at 600V) with functions to meet global requirements for motor branch circuit protection. All 140M circuit breakers are UL approved for both short-circuit and overload protection on individual motor loads. They are ideal for use in two component starter solutions.

Bulletin 140U Molded Case Circuit Breakers provide advanced feeder distribution and branch circuit protection with ratings from 125A to 1200A. The molded case design reduces panel space and offers the industry's highest interrupt ratings per frame.

Bulletin 100-D Contactors extend the current MCS line with contactors ranging from 95A to 860A in three frame sizes. Features include finger protection to IP20, optional power terminations, common interlocks and electronic coils with PLC interface operation.

Bulletin 100S-D Safety Contactors, available in ratings ranging from 95A to 860A, provide safe, reliable isolation of hazardous motion loads in modern safety circuits. Auxiliary contacts "mirror" the main contacts to provide accurate indication about the open/closed or welded status of the main power poles.

Bulletin 193-E Overload Relays offer direct connection to the 100-D Contactors for quick installation and efficient use of panel space. Built-in DeviceNet(TM) communication provides immediate access to motor performance data, diagnostics and control functions.

Bulletin 141A Mounting System includes modules to accommodate a wide range of IEC motor control and protection solutions. The modular system allows combinations for feeding and protecting a bus bar system, including exclusive ISO bus bar modules, which isolate the user from the bus bar when the starter is removed.

MCS Star configuration software provides a user-friendly graphical interface to design electrical control systems using Allen-Bradley MCS components. Users can design systems that meet either IEC or UL/CSA/NEC requirements, including support for global motor and control voltages; report formats to assemble the entire bill-of-material into a structured order; view/print dimension drawings for panel layout and export of designs into CAD packages through DXF output format.
